Return at the margins of Europe
The paper examines the Return and Readmission Policy in Slovenia within the European Union (EU) migration governance regime, addressing how migration control is shaped by policy intentions, institutional practices, and political interests. Although officially presented as balancing enforcement and human rights protection, Slovenia’s migration policy is shown to be strongly oriented toward control, deterrence, and the removal of “irregular” migran…
Od kamnitega do spletnega portala
This paper presents a system for detecting changes in Slovene word usage, enabling the automatic identification of semantic and other shifts across different time periods. We first introduce the system’s technical design and requirements, the methodology for detecting changes, and the graphical user interface, which ensures a user-friendly experience. We then demonstrate how the system can be implemented on the reference corpus of Slovene, Gigafi…
Whose children? The EU and Member States’ integration policies in education
A gap exists between the EU’s professed guarantees of the rights of migrant children and Member States’ individual practices concerning integration. The EU promotes policies claiming to be based on the rights of the child, children’s best interests, and a child‐friendly integration system. Both theory and the EU framework also insist that integration should be understood as a two‐way process. Yet national practices and policies shift responsibili…
Krimigracije v Sloveniji
Avtorici v članku obravnavata »krimigracijo« (tj. kriminalizacijo migracij) v Sloveniji. Raziskujeta elemente kriminalizacije migracij v pravnem okviru, institucijah in politikah.
Migrant remittances in times of economic decline
Faced with financial crisis and recession, many countries may promote return migration as a measure to combat economic decline. This affects the transnational migration and thus likely to contribute to a decline in remittance flows. At the same time, human agency proves the resilience of the migrants’ coping strategies, since many migrant workers – though faced with heightened pressure and increased precariousness of their positions – nevertheles…
Nationalism, gender and the multivocality of war discourse in television news
War discourse is typically characterized by a confluence of nationalist and sexist discourses, and tends to reduce the multiple identities and affiliations of human beings to a black-and-white contrast of ‘us’ and ‘them’. Yet, as argued in this article, we should be wary of over-emphasizing the homogeneity and monovocality of war discourse. While the onset of conflict certainly narrows the range of collective identities and narratives on offer in…
Migrant Women’s Transnationalism
Whereas current policies on migration and integration are beginning to recognise family reunion as one of the most legitimate reasons for acceptance by a host society, they in most cases still do not account for the growing trend of feminisation of migration, and even rarely do they address specific migrants’ needs. As currently constituted, the integration bills envision a one‐way process that places migrants into a position where they cannot qu…
Television news, narrative conventions and national imagination
By and large, contemporary news stories are stories about a particular nation, told to an audience that is seen and addressed in national terms. However, the understanding of the exact ways in which national imagination becomes engrained in the narrative conventions of news reporting is still rather limited, in particular when it comes to audiovisual genres. This article aims to fill a part of this blank by examining the links between national im…
