  • Pathways to instability

    Open Access•Martijn C Vlaskamp•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2025•References: 28

Existing research has shown a correlation between lower oil prices and political instability in oil-rich countries. This paper examines the conditions under which declining oil revenues can contribute to political instability in such countries, with a focus on the impact of the 1980s oil glut on 29 oil-rich countries. Employing Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), the study identifies three distinct pathways to political instability during thi…

  • Does international recognition matter? Support for unilateral secession in Catalonia and Scotland

    Open Access•Diego Muro, Guillem Vidal et al.•ARTICLE•Nations and Nationalism•2020•Cited by: 10•References: 47

How much do the prospects of international recognition of a possible new state affect the domestic support for secession? To answer this research question, we adopted a most similar systems design and conducted a Web‐based survey experiment in Catalonia and Scotland. Respondents were presented with plausible scenarios regarding the international recognition of a hypothetical independent state by other countries and were subsequently asked whether…

    Open Access•Martijn C Vlaskamp•ARTICLE•Cooperation and Conflict•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 3

Natural resources can be an important source of funding for warring parties in armed conflicts. Curbing the trade in these so-called conflict resources is, therefore, part of the European Union’s conflict management policies. The article explores the EU’s policies in this field and asks, specifically, why the EU is using supply chain due-diligence measures to achieve this goal. The author argues that they are the response to enforcement problems …

    Open Access•Lena Partzsch, Martijn C Vlaskamp•ARTICLE•The Extractive Industries and…•2016•Cited by: 10•References: 26

The European Union, the United States, and a number of other state actors have adopted policies obliging companies to conduct supply chain due diligence regarding the import of natural resources. While several authors have analyzed the motives of these measures individually, this article provides a broader explanation for their diffusion. In empirical terms, it focuses on ‘conflict minerals’ and illegally logged timber. Building on the classical …

  • How do prospects of EU membership influence support for secession? A survey experiment in Catalonia and Scotland

    Diego Muro, Martijn C Vlaskamp•ARTICLE•West European Politics•2016•Cited by: 20•References: 25

The past years have been eventful for secessionist movements in Europe and in particular in Scotland and Catalonia. Supporters and opponents of secession of both stateless nations considered their prospects for future EU membership as an important part of the campaigns leading to the referendums. The article’s aim is to explore whether international factors influence domestic support for secession. In order to answer this puzzle, an on-line surve…
