Kurdish Disillusionment With The European Union
The subject of this study comprises how Turkey’s EU membership is seen by HDP-supporter Kurdish voters in Turkey, as a non-EU country that has on-hold negotiations but still an ostensible vision for membership. There is a dearth of literature regarding Kurdish voters’ views on the EU, and this study, employing the focus group method, aims to address this gap by providing insights into the perspectives of Kurdish voters who support the HDP on Turk…
The De-Europeanization of the Kurdish Question in Turkey and the EU
Using an in-depth interview method, this study examined HDP deputies’ thoughts concerning Turkey–EU relations, its effect on Kurdish issues, and the HDP’s expectations of the EU, showing that the high expectations of the EU during the 1990s and early 2000s have faded and that the EU accession process no longer generates enthusiasm among the HDP deputies interviewed. The most notable finding of the interviews was the consensus that the EU has now …
AKP’s electoral success: Populist communication and conservative welfare regime in Turkey
During his 22-year rule, Turkey’s populist leader Erdoğan not only ensured his control of mainstream media ownership, but he also aligned the language and style of these media with his own populist politics. This investigation presents a unique perspective by highlighting the AKP’s establishment of a network of loyal media outlets and business individuals through crony capitalism while also demonstrating that the party garnered loyalty from relig…
When Fake News and Personal Experience Contradict: Limits to Post-Truth in Turkey
While many studies examine Erdoğan’s growing control over the Turkish media sector, there are hardly any studies that look at how post-truth affects the low-income urban consumers of partisan media in Turkey, which this article aims to do. This focus group study reveals that the partisan media has a significant impact on the views and behaviour of the relatively less educated urban poor, but personal experiences prove a significant factor in the …
Ethnic and Islamist populism in Turkey and its impact on Kurdish nationalism
Rather than addressing the Kurdish conflict in Turkey directly, this study focuses on how the rising nationalist populism bears on Kurdish voters supporting the pro‐Kurdish party HDP. There are very few studies on how Kurds are affected by the nationalist populism often expressed in Turkey by the governing People's Alliance (Cumhur İttifakı) with its slogan “domestic and national,” even though the literature offers a broad variety of studies on t…
A Not-So-Friendly Match Between ‘Old Turkey’ and ‘New Turkey’: Turkish Football and Stadiums as a Domain of Hegemonic Struggle
The Turkish Football League has been the stage of a struggle between the secular ‘Old Turkey’ and neo-Ottomanist/Islamist ‘New Turkey’. Despite having established an authoritarian regime and concentrated power in his hands, football stadiums are still places of resistance against and a source of anxiety for President Erdoğan. Those who feel the need to protest against interference with their lifestyle by the governing Islamist party exhibit their…
The network of capitalist ‘cronies’ of the AKP: Başakşehir and Başakşehirspor
The upgrading of Başakşehir from a quarter to a district is related to the transformation of İstanbul Başakşehir Football Club from a football club into a politico-cultural project carried out capitalist cronies attached to the governing (Justice and Development Party). ‘Rent-seeking’ activities in cultural areas are usually neglected or, if anything, considered the indirect results of developments in the financial or economic field. Sports in ge…
