Global Insurrectional Politics
With/Out a State, Kurds Rising: The Un/Stated Foreign Policy and the Rise of the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq
Located in northern Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) rules over an autonomous province in Iraq. Constitutionally, ‘Kurdistan Region’ is not independent, but empirically the KRG behaves as if it is a sovereign entity. With an elected parliament, a president, a prime minister, a cabinet, a flag, a national anthem, schools taught in Kurdish, and a booming economy, the ‘Kurdistan’ embodied by the KRG clearly exists empirically while unre…

Globalization and Politics
Arab Revolutions and World Transformations
Uprisings in ‘Arab Streets’, Revolutions in ‘Arab Minds’! A Provocation
The uprisings sweeping the Arab world are already transformative even if in the end they fail to bring about fundamental changes. They have already articulated a globalist outlook showing that it is possible to move in step with the world without alienating indigenous political and philosophical anchors. They have already energized an attitude that is not afraid of or embarrassed about the multiple legacies that shape the modern Middle East, incl…
Rocking the Kasbah: Insurrectional Politics, the “Arab Streets”, and Global Revolution in the 21st Century
Communication/Excommunication
The transversal politics in Indigenous movements in the Americas and beyond has been proliferating in multiple political forms. Ranging from international governmental organizations to extrastatist Indigenous networks, Indigenous struggles have energized historical transversality as a viable political universe. This universe works syncretically within the ambit of the traditional statist diplomatic regime but is neither subsumed within nor eclips…
Transversal communication, diaspora, and the Euro-Kurds
The International Relations discipline (IR) has been uniquely resistant to practices and knowledges aimed at broadening the horizons of IR’s subjects. The discipline has worked to incarcerate its subjects in a location of analysis – spatially Cartesian and politically state-oriented – conditioned to ignore the transnational and transversal formations that have become central to politics. However, this disciplining has also engendered counter-move…
Indigenous Peoples and Radical Futures in Global Politics
Contemporary indigenous movements in global politics are energized by indigenous histories as paradoxical sites of both domination and resistance. Indigenous knowledges work as sites of indigenous epistemologies that take centuries-long subordination by a myriad of forces and turn it into a process productive of transformative politics. For indigenous peoples, this is a question of strategy of effective politics. This article examines how this st…
Splinters of Hegemony: Ontopoetical Visions in International Relations
Drawing on a montage of specific cases from diverse political landscapes that echo well beyond their specificity, this article examines border poetics enacted in international migration, biopolitical poetics harnessed to the resistance by refugees to government regimentation of their displacement, the disruptive potential of poetics in the war in Iraq, and the poetics of poverty and wealth in Jamaica
Introduction: Geography and the Reconceptualization of Politics
An introduction to a special issue, this article explores the form of the political founded upon spatial transformation: an enabling framework of recognition setting parameters for the sayable and unsayable. It points especially to techniques of discipline, repression, and exhibition through which control over space is maintained and to the ambivalence, contradiction, and paradox inherent in place
On the Task of Politics as a 'Project': Politics, Hegemony, Embedded Lives and Fugitive Agency
On the Task of Politics as a ‘Project’: Politics, Hegemony, Embedded Lives and Fugitive Agency Nevzat Soguk (bio) This is a timely and thought-provoking paper. I agree with much of what the paper argues. I agree, for instance, that there is a certain conditioning of the American social and political landscapes through multiple and intersecting knowledge practices. Think-tanks constitute one of many nodes through which such knowledgeable practices…
Traveling Islam: Islamic Identities in Transnational Localities
Traveling Islam: Islamic Identities in Transnational Localities Nevzat Soguk (bio) Peter Mandaville (2001) Transnational Muslim Politics: Re-Imagining the Umma (London: Routledge). Given the proliferation of sweeping pronouncements on Islam since September 11, Transnational Muslim Politics is a thoughtful intervention in the prevailing discourse of incitement about and on Islam. What is remarkable is that, although published shortly before Septem…
Incarcerating Travels: Travel Stories, Tourist Orders, and the Politics of the 'Hawai'ian Paradise
This article explores how travel practices are structured and harnessed to politics. While travel practices operate through claims of innocence, curiosity and adventure, they are deeply political practices that participate in projects and programmes ranging from statecraft to appropriation of peoples and places in the service of global nanscapes. In Michel de Certeau’s words, travelling in economies of desire, travel practices partake in the ‘pro…
Poetics of a World of Migrancy: Migratory Horizons, Passages, and Encounters of Alterity
Wandering Grounds: Transversality, Identity, Territoriality, and Movement
Predicaments of Territorial Democracy and Statecraft in Europe: How European Democracies Regiment Migratory Movements
Once viewed as minor irritants, asylum seekers, refugees, and immigrants in the broadest sense are increasingly seen as sources of change and transformation for the places they affect.2 Scholars and policymakers alike seem to concur on this point, though arriving at different interpretive conclusions as to the nature of changes spurred by refugees and immigrants. Most governmental commentaries on the issue see adverse or deleterious consequences …
Humanitarian Interventions as Practises of Statecraft: Re-Crafting State Sovereignty in Refugee Crises
This study argues that humanitarian interventions are not undertaken merely to alleviate the sufferings of people under duress such as refugees. Beyond humanitarianism, they are activities of statist governance-practices of statecraft oriented to re-articulate and re-craft state sovereignty and the hierarchy it signifies, that is, the hierarchy of citizen/nation/state, not only as natural but also as necessary to the peaceful, stable, and secure …
Reflections on the “Orientalized Orientals”
What we really need is a critical language and a full-scale critical culture, not name calling or the rhetorical equivalent of political murder. Our purpose is to assess and critique power in the Arab world. Not according to grandiose schemas imported from Hegel and Stalin and so on: many of the miseries of the Arab left are ascribable to the importation of methodological instruments or Orientalist models from abroad having no relation to our lif…
