Does HIV Stigma Predict Social Networks Over Time
Internalised stigma as durable social determinant of HIV care for transnational patients of Puerto Rican ancestry
Intersectional stigmas have been contributing barriers to linkage and retention in HIV care for Latinx communities. Our analysis examines whether reductions in HIV-related and other stigmas were associated (or not) with progression on the HIV continuum of care for Puerto Ricans living with HIV, patients of the U.S. Special Projects of National Significance (SPNS) initiative: 'Culturally Appropriate Interventions of Outreach, Access and Retention …
Examining transdiagnostic vulnerabilities among HIV positive smokers seen at three inner city community based organizations
Investigators have proposed a "transdiagnostic vulnerability framework" that examines the relationship between smoking and broader emotional factors, including anhedonia, anxiety sensitivity, and distress tolerance. Because smoking and depression are more common in persons living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) than in the general population, understanding the relationship between smoking and mental health is critical. High Rates of Access to Health Care, Disclosure of Sexuality and Gender Identity to Providers Among House and Ball Community Members in New York City
The House and Ball community is an important cultural manifestation of resiliency for Black and Latino gay and bisexual men and transgender women. Participants at the August 2013 House of Latex Ball in New York City were surveyed about insurance coverage, health care access, experiences in health care, and housing instability. The sample (n = 367) was 58% Black/African American and 20% Hispanic/Latino, with a mean age of 31. Fifty-five percent we…

The Struggle to Be Seen
Not Just Another Labor Party
This paper analyzes Brazil's Partido dos Trabalhadores, The Workers' Party (PT), from its origins in social movements to becoming one of the largest political parties in Brazil. The party's trajectory from semi-clandestine meetings during Brazil's military dictatorship (1964-85) to a successful national organization with international linkages is an instructive case-study of how labor parties can con tend in democratic politics during the neolibe…
Contentious Pluralism
What do peasants in eighteenth-century England, African Americans in Reconstruction-era Virginia, mothers in Nicaragua and Argentina, and contemporary transnational activists have to do with one another? They all illustrate instances where marginalized groups challenge a lack of democracy or the limitations of existing democracy. Democracy is both a process and a product of struggles against power. Both the social capital literature and literatur…
Trial By Space
This article compares two social movements in Brazil to demonstrate how movements ground citizenship claims in the spaces of everyday life. It draws on Henri Lefebvre's concept of "trial by space," showing how movements contest the way that constitutionally guaranteed citizenship rights are limited in the spaces where people live, work, and play. First, the neighborhood movement of Aurá, a poor community in Belém's periphery, grounds its citizens…
