  • The Bright Future of Online Programming for Girls’ STEM Identity Development

    Open Access•Roxanne Hughes, R Edmé Domínguez et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2026

Informal STEM education programs (ISEs) can be a successful vehicle for addressing the underrepresentation of girls in STEM by expanding their views of what constitutes science and debunking stereotypes related to who succeeds in STEM careers. Research has demonstrated how in-person ISEs provide opportunities for girls to engage in hands-on, authentic science experiences, interact with diverse women role models, and understand the real-world appl…

  • The End of a STEM Identity Pathway

Open Access•Roxanne Hughes, Maati McKinney et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2025

This article provides a compelling argument using qualitative analysis for the longitudinal impact of an all-girls’ summer camp that was recently canceled due to an Executive Order from the Federal government. This paper will discuss: (1) the history of the program, including its changing funding sources over time; (2) the support of the local community that sustained this program; and (3) the ways in which the program influenced girls long after…

  • Resilience is not enough for Black women in STEM

Open Access•Roxanne Hughes, Amal Ibourk et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Science…•2024

Both K‐12 schools and STEM disciplines are embedded in White supremacy and exclusion, making it that much harder for Black women to maintain an interest and sense of belonging in STEM. Through a Critical Race Feminism methodology, we tell the counterstories of our two co‐authors, two Black women, over the course of their lives. Through these counterstories (stories that run counter to normative stories of STEM as male and White), Kelli and Samant…

  • “It is what it is”

Open Access•Amal Ibourk, Roxanne Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Science…•2022

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) identity has become a popular lens in science education research. However, few studies have looked at how using the interpersonal, structural, cultural, and disciplinary domains of power sheds light on how women of color differently navigate the various cultures of formal and informal schooling as well as college science and math departments. This paper uses narrative inquiry methodology to…

  • The role of recognition in disciplinary identity for girls

Open Access•Roxanne Hughes, Jennifer Schellinger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Science…•2021

Computing fields are foundational to most STEM disciplines and the only STEM discipline to show a consistent decline in women's representation since 1990, making it an important field for STEM educators to study. The explanation for the underrepresentation of women and girls in computing is twofold: a sense that they do not fit within the stereotypes associated with computing and a lack of access to computer games and technologies beginning at an…

  • The Public Policy Process among Southeastern States

    Open Access•W Kyle Ingle, Lora Cohen‐vogel et al.•ARTICLE•Policy Studies Journal•2007•Cited by: 7•References: 24

Having been adopted by legislatures in over a dozen states, postsecondary merit aid programs are largely concentrated in the southeastern United States. The observed clustering pattern seems to support previous evidence that policies spread between proximate states, a phenomenon referred to by political scientists as policy diffusion. Often, however, policy diffusion is not complete, and one or more states in a region fail to adopt. By interviewi…
