A Web of Interests
The United States has adopted a policy of geological disposal to resolve the problem of permanent disposition of highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel (SNF), but has been unable to implement this policy. This study draws upon literature on policymaking and interest group representation to examine that inability. It develops and explores a conceptualization of policy stalemate to analyze the case. The study finds that the United States has arrived …
Shortcut ‘Input-Output’ Multipliers, Alive and Well
Jensen and Hewings have devoted most of their comments to our work as presented in a number of papers dated between 1977 and 1982. It might be noted that the tone and content of their current paper is quite different from that adopted in an earlier paper by Jensen. In the present paper we attempt to respond to their major criticisms and reservations one by one and to clarify a number of points where there appears to be some confusion about our pu…
A Shortcut Method for Computing Final Demand Multipliers for Small Regions
The Phibbs-Holsman shortcut formula can produce sizeable errors especially for large regions. This paper derives an alternative shortcut final demand multiplier formula with the same data requirements as the Phibbs-Holsman formula that is accurate for both small and large regions
A Technique to Obtain Accurate Impact Multipliers for Individual Firms by Means of Existing Input-Output Models
A low-cost technique is developed that allows individual firms and establishments to estimate accurately their output, income, and employment multipliers by integrating their regional coefficients (the proportion of the purchases of a firm from each sector of the regional economy) with an existing regional input-output model. The empirical tests of this method on three actual survey-based input-output models produced excellent results
