  • Feminist Ethnographies of Women in Prison

Beth E Richie, Barbara Owens et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Studies•2004•Cited by: 4

I CANNOT IMAGINE A PLACE where one might stand and have a clearer view of concentrated disadvantage based on racial, class, and gender in equality in the country then from inside the walls of a women's prison. There, behind the razor wire fences, concrete barricades, steel doors, metal bars, and thick plexiglass windows, nearly all of the manifestations of gender domination that feminist scholars and activists have traditional ly concerned themse…

  • Women in Prison: Gender and Social Control

Mary Bosworth, M Elaine Eriksen et al.•BOOK•Women in Prison•2003

It is old news that the conditions and policies of women's prisons are different from those of incarcerated men. Less evident, however, is how gender differences shape those policies, and how gender identity and roles shape women's adaptation and resistance to prison culture and control. Women in Prison explores how the gender-based attitudes that women bring to prison frame how they respond to the prison environment—and how gender stereotypes co…

  • Woman-to-Woman Sexual Violence: Does She Call It Rape

    Raquel Kennedy Bergen, Lori B Girshick•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•2003

Most legal systems are unequipped to deal with woman-to-woman sexual assault; women's services do not have the resources to reach out to its victims; and lesbian and gay communities face hurdles in acknowledging its existence. Already dealing with complex issues related to their sexual identities, and frequently overwhelmed by shame, lesbian and bisexual survivors of such violence are among the most isolated of crime victims. Based on a nationwid…

This article discusses some of the main issues raised by woman-to-woman sexual violence. The author emphasizes the challenges of admitting that sexual violence by women occurs, changing laws to acknowledge the seriousness of woman-to-woman sexual abuse, improving agency services for lesbian and bisexual survivors of sexual abuse, and compelling the antiviolence movement to take this issue seriously. A major focus concerns the need for a feminist …

  • Soledad Women: Wives of Prisoners Speak Out

    Lori B Girshick•BOOK•Soledad Women•1996

Little attention has been paid to the lives led by families of prisoners. Using a feminist approach, the author explores how the lives of 25 wives of prisoners at Soledad prison are affected by the incarceration of their husbands. Relationships, stigma, coping, finances, children, the prison system, and rehabilitation are explored through in-depth interviews. This study describes the experiences of the wives and seeks to connect their experiences…

  • The Politics of Measuring Poverty Among the Elderly

    Open Access•Lori B Girshick, John B Williamson•ARTICLE•Policy Studies Journal•1982•Cited by: 2•References: 5

We discuss the special problems associated with efforts to measure poverty among the elderly. Income measures must be adjusted for a variety of non‐income sources of well‐being such as net worth, human capital, and in‐kind, transfers. While such adjustments are needed, efforts to date are problematic to the extent that new sources of error are introduced. A close analysis of official government measures of poverty reveals that they reflect a vari…
