  • The principle of anticipation in language use

Open Access•Fan Lu, Fangzhe Lu et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

Anticipation is a psychological phenomenon that refers to the beliefs or desires of cognitive agents with respect to the world surrounding them, and that can influence the behaviour and decisions of such agents. This paper addresses the status and the role of anticipation in the shaping of language structures. We sketch a preliminary theoretical framework for anticipation in language and linguistic research. Anticipation is presented as a neural …

  • Nonlinear effects of humidex on risk for asthenopia among adults

Open Access•Xiaotian Wu, Xin Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction The health effects of ambient humidity and temperature are well-established. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between humidity, temperature, and asthenopia. Our goal was to quantify the impact of humidity and temperature on the likelihood and severity of asthenopia among adults in China. Methods We conducted a national cross-sectional online survey from June 2020 to March 2022, involving 48,000 adults aged 18 a…

  • Future projections of the rainfall intensity-duration-frequency curves in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration based on NEX-GDDP CMIP6 simulations

  • Natural Disasters and Local Governments' Fiscal Misconduct

Open Access•Fan Lu, Futao Lu et al.•ARTICLE•Policy Studies Journal•2025•References: 50

Preventing fiscal misconduct associated with disaster‐aid related windfall revenue poses significant challenges for governments due to the unpredictable and often temporary nature of such income streams. This study examines how natural disasters affect fiscal misconduct among local governments by using five major earthquakes in recent China. Utilizing county‐level data compiled from five destructive earthquakes from 2012 to 2018 and a Difference …

  • The Preference-Expectation Gap in Support for Female Candidates

Open Access•Gento Kato, Fan Lu et al.•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•2025•References: 25

Gender disparities in Japanese government are consistently high, but evidence of voter bias against female politicians is mixed. We argue that this discrepancy arises because some researchers measure Japanese voters’ first-order preferences (who they personally support) while other researchers measure Japanese voters’ second-order preferences (who they expect other voters to support). We call this gap between voters’ own preferences and expectati…

  • Effectiveness evaluation of flipped classroom in emergency medicine online teaching for medical undergraduates

Fan Lu, Zhiquan Luo et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2024

Introduction Due to policy changes in the context of COVID-19 pandemic, online teaching has become the main form of class in many Chinese universities. Flipped classroom has been widely used in other disciplines, but there is a dearth of evidence available about the use in online teaching of emergency medicine. This study aimed to develop a flipped classroom for online emergency medicine teaching and evaluate its effectiveness by comparing it wit…

  • A Comparative Approach to Explaining Gender Disparities in Asian American and Asian Canadian Politics

    Open Access•Fan Lu•ARTICLE•Politics & Gender•2024•References: 11

In 2020, Asian Americans were the least descriptively represented at all levels of elected office compared to whites, Blacks, and Latinos (Sedique, Bhojwani, and Lee 2020). In this context, Asian women lagged behind Asian men in holding local-level positions, yet they surpassed Asian men in holding federal and statewide offices, and they led 81% of state- and local-level Asian civil rights organizations (AAPI Power Fund 2020; Reflective Democracy…

  • Prevalence and determinants of asthenopia among ophthalmologists in China

Open Access•Na Lin, Yu Zhu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction The role of ophthalmologists is defined by tasks requiring visual effort, emphasizing the importance of examining their condition within the realm of occupational visual health. Our goal was to explore the occurrence of asthenopia among Chinese ophthalmologists and identify contributing factors through the use of a reliable and validated survey instrument. Methods A national cross-sectional online survey was carried out in June 2017,…

  • Experiencing Buddhist practices promotes nonbelievers’ preference for future rewards in intertemporal choices

    Open Access•Ziyi Wang, Z M Wang et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2023•References: 34

Religious individuals often prefer future rewards more in intertemporal decision‐making than nonreligious individuals, but the reasons behind this preference remain under‐investigated. Focusing on decision‐making in Buddhist culture, the current study aimed to examine three potential mechanisms: Buddhist practices, self‐control and belief in future‐oriented concepts. In five studies, we consistently found that nonbelievers’ preference ratings for…

  • The Dual Identity of Asian Americans

    Open Access•Fan Lu•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 21

Objective This article investigates whether gains in ethnic identity reduce pan‐ethnic identity among Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). Methods Ordered logit regression using data from the 2016 National Asian American Survey (NAAS). Results Gains in ethnic identity do not reduce pan‐ethnic identity among AAPI. As importance of ethnic identity moves from “not at all” to “extremely,” log odds of reporting higher levels of pan‐Asian ident…

  • Effects of belief versus experiential discrimination on race-based linked fate

Fan Lu, Bradford Jones•ARTICLE•Politics Groups and Identities•2019•Cited by: 20•References: 4

Since Michael Dawson first put forward the theory that being targets of racial discrimination increases perceptions of linked fate amongst African Americans, applications of his theory to non-Black and contemporary African Americans have arrived at mixed findings. These inconsistencies may be attributed to different conceptualizations of discrimination and a partiality for personal experiences rather than beliefs about discrimination. Using the 2…

  • Forging ties

    Fan Lu•ARTICLE•Politics Groups and Identities•2018•Cited by: 8•References: 14

There is little consensus on how discrimination against racial minorities affects their potential for forming political alliances with out-groups who are also targets of racial discrimination. Furthermore, the relationship between Latinos and Asian Americans is an under-explored area in the study of inter-minority relations. Using data from the 2008 National Asian American Survey (NAAS), I test the argument that individual and group-based discrim…

  • Menthol decreases oral nicotine aversion in C57BL/6 mice through a TRPM8-dependent mechanism

Lu Fan, Fan Lu et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2016

Oral menthol can reduce the aversive effects of oral nicotine and, at higher concentrations, acts as an irritant by itself. Menthol's effects in relation to nicotine require TRPM8, the cool temperature sensing ion channel that activates analgesic and counterirritant mechanisms. These mechanisms may underlie preference for menthol-containing smokeless tobacco products and may facilitate initiation of product use

  • Development of an Elderly Low Vision Quality of Life Questionnaire for less-developed areas of China

Open Access•Xiaoman Li, Jie Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2015

  • Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome/human immunodeficiency virus knowledge, attitudes, and practices, and use of healthcare services among rural migrants

Open Access•Wang Ying, Ying Wang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes, and practices among rural migrants in China remain a thorny health issue, and use of healthcare services needs to be improved. Low levels of education and knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS among housekeepers and migrant day laborers result in this population likely being engaged in high-risk sex. Government programs should pay more attention to public education, health promotion and intervention for the control of the HI…
