  • US Water Pollution Regulation over the Past Half Century

    Open Access•David A Keiser, Joseph S Shapiro et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2019•Cited by: 5

In the half century since the founding of the US Environmental Protection Agency, public and private US sources have spent nearly $5 trillion ($2017) to provide clean rivers, lakes, and drinking water (annual spending of 0.8 percent of US GDP in most years). Yet over half of rivers and substantial shares of drinking water systems violate standards, and polls for decades have listed water pollution as Americans' number one environmental concern. W…

  • Why Is Pollution from US Manufacturing Declining? The Roles of Environmental Regulation, Productivity, and Trade

Joseph S Shapiro, Joseph Shapiro et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2018

Between 1990 and 2008, air pollution emissions from US manufacturing fell by 60 percent despite a substantial increase in manufacturing output. We show that these emissions reductions are primarily driven by within-product changes in emissions intensity rather than changes in output or in the composition of products produced. We then develop and estimate a quantitative model linking trade with the environment to better understand the economic for…

  • Defensive Investments and the Demand for Air Quality

Olivier Deschênes, Madison Greenstone et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2017

The demand for air quality depends on health impacts and defensive investments, but little research assesses the empirical importance of defenses. A rich quasi-experiment suggests that the Nitrogen Oxides (NO x ) Budget Program (NBP), a cap-and-trade market, decreased NO x emissions, ambient ozone concentrations, pharmaceutical expenditures, and mortality rates. The annual reductions in pharmaceutical purchases, a key defensive investment, and mo…

  • Adapting to Climate Change

Alan Barreca, Karen Clay et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2016•Cited by: 75•References: 5

This paper examines the temperature-mortality relationship over the course of the twentieth-century United States both for its own interest and to identify potentially useful adaptations for coming decades. There are three primary findings. First, the mortality impact of days with mean temperature exceeding 80°F declined by 75 percent. Almost the entire decline occurred after 1960. Second, the diffusion of residential air conditioning explains es…

  • Young Adults' Drug Use

    Open Access•Judith S Brook, Elinor B Balka et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1997

This longitudinal study examined the interrelation of personality and peer factors on young adults' drug use and also the influence of the interaction of personality and peer factors on drug use. • Disability Policy and the Media

    Open Access•Joseph Shapiro, Joseph P Shapiro•ARTICLE•Policy Studies Journal•1994•Cited by: 8•References: 1

The Americans with Disabilities Act was pushed through Congress with far less attention from the media than has accompanied other major civil rights bills. This was part of a deliberate and unconventional strategy by disability rights lobbyists who believed that media portrayals of disability were so cliched that journalists would impede, not further, the public's understanding of disability rights issues. Despite the success of the strategy, the…
