How “Point Blindness” Dilutes the Value of Stock Market Reports
The stock index “point” is a focal component of financial news reports. Though many reports draw attention to point changes in major indices, few people realize that the value of a stock index “point” changes frequently. We call this perceptual phenomenon “point blindness.” We examine causes of point blindness and then propose alternate ways of reporting stock market information to counter it. The alternatives are easy to implement and can help c…

General Economic Equilibrium with Dispersed Preferences over Discrete Alternatives
This paper is concerned with the foundations of urban spatial interaction modelling but is cast in a more general form. Its purpose is to establish a sound microeconomic basis for the construction of CGE (computable general equilibrium) models of cities. It is based on three premises: (1) before trying to compute equilibria, it is prudent to show that they exist; (2) careful consideration of the circumstances under which they exist is advantageou…

The Measurement of Efficiency in Multiunit Public Services
After a review of the concepts of efficiency and effectiveness in multiunit nonmarket organisations, a recently developed technique known as Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is described and illustrated in this paper, and it is shown how this technique may be used in performance measurement. The linear fractional programming and equivalent linear programming formulations of the DEA problem are presented and an illustrative problem is solved. Some …
The Estimation and Application of Multi‐regional Economic Planning Models Using Data Envelopment Analysis
On the Relationship between Land Rent and Transport Market Consumer Surplus
In a recent article, O'Sullivan and Ralston set out “... to demonstrate the equivalence of rent and transport market consumer surplus in the limited, partial circumstances of classical theory....” The
Some Comments on the Stevens Linear and Quadratic Programming Versions of von Thünen's Theory of Agricultural Land Usage
This paper examines the Stevens linear and quadratic programming formulations of von Thünen's analysis of agricultural land usage (Stevens, 1968). The first section contains a description of the Walras—Wald version of general economic equilibrium, plus a working definition of the expressions: general equilibrium sketch, paticularised general equilibrium sketch, and partial equilibrium sketch. [The author's distinction between a sketch and a model…
