  • Burst of the Filter Bubble?: Effects of personalization on the diversity of Google News

Mario Haim, Andreas Graefe et al.•ARTICLE•Digital Journalism•2018

In offering personalized content geared toward users’ individual interests, recommender systems are assumed to reduce news diversity and thus lead to partial information blindness (i.e., filter bubbles). We conducted two exploratory studies to test the effect of both implicit and explicit personalization on the content and source diversity of Google News. Except for small effects of implicit personalization on content diversity, we found no suppo…

    Open Access•Hans‐bernd Brosius, Hans-Bernd Brosius et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Research•1996•Cited by: 52•References: 12

This study examines four models of a two-step flow of the agenda-setting process, highlighting the role played by certain individuals (early recognizers ) in mediating between the public and the media. The data sets contained coding of news items on the major German television networks from 1990 to 1993 and 28 surveys conducted in West and East Germany between September 1990 and December 1992, sampling over 1,000 individuals in each survey to stu…

    Open Access•Hans‐bernd Brosius, Hans-Bernd Brosius et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•1995•Cited by: 47•References: 12

Since reunification, the German public has witnessed four highly violent riots and attacks against aliens and foreigners. Both at home and abroad, the riots at Hoyerswerda and Rostock, as well as the arson attacks of Mölln and Solingen, have led to fears of a growing hostility against aliens and of an increasing right-wing radicalism in the united Germany. Besides these four key events, the Federal Office for Criminal Investigation (Bundeskrimina…

  • Instrumental Actualization: A Theory of Mediated Conflicts

    Open Access•Hans Mathias Kepplinger, Hans‐bernd Brosius et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•1991•Cited by: 46•References: 14

Mediated conflicts are controversies between at least two parties who exchange information and arguments indirectly by the mass media. The discourse in mediated conflicts is influenced by its public character. By forwarding information and arguments to the media, conflict parties attempt to gain support from their constituencies and persuade their opponents. This raises the question of the role the media plays in selecting news about such conflic…

    Open Access•Gabriel Weimann, Hans‐bernd Brosius et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Research•1991•Cited by: 20•References: 11

The emergence of media-oriented terrorism has led scholars of modern terrorism to reconceptualize this phenomenon within the framework of symbolic communication theory. This study focuses on the newsworthiness of international terrorism. It relates the concept of deviance as a predictor of newsworthiness to the specific attributes of terrorist events and their impact on media selection (coverage or no coverage) and prominence of coverage (amount …

  • Is There a Two-Step Flow of Agenda-Setting

    G Weimann, Hans‐bernd Brosius et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Public…•1994•Cited by: 13

The present study integrates two concepts: the notion of opinion leadership, as conceptualized and measured by the Strength of Personality (SP) scale, and the agenda-setting process. Thus, we suggest and test a two-step flow model in which certain individuals, the influentials, identify emerging issues in the mass media and then diffuse these issues to others via their personal networks. Based on a series of six national surveys conducted in Germ…

The data come from a British sample of more than 3700 households, using a viewing diary for all the pro…

  • How unique is the perspective of television? A field experiment on the perception of a campaign event by participants and television viewers

    Wolfgang Donsbach, Hans‐bernd Brosius et al.•ARTICLE•Political Communication•1993•Cited by: 4•References: 4

The present study compares how people perceive a political event as a participant and as a television viewer of the same event. More than any other medium, television can convey to its audience the illusion of being an eyewitness of an event. At the same time, due to its specific presentation techniques, television has a particular capability of creating impressions of an event that may differ considerably from the impression created by the real …

Exemplars are short quotations (verbal or visual) from concerned or interested people that illustrate a particular problem or a particular view on a problem. They are frequently used in journalism because of their authenticity and their vividness. Past research shows that exemplars influence opinions and attitudes more strongly than statistics, comprehensive overviews or official information, although the latter are doubtlessly more valid. This s…
