News media literacy as a bridge: Alleviating antisemitic attitudes among Muslims facing discrimination
We address the relationship between negative news media coverage of Islam and antisemitic attitudes among Muslims as an indicator of cognitive Islamist radicalization. Conceptually grounded in Social Identity Theory and the concept of intergroup competitive victimhood, the study investigates the effects of exposure to negative news media coverage of Muslims and Islam on Muslims living in Germany ( N = 96). While exposure to negative news does not…
Perceptions of Minority Discrimination: Perspectives of Jews Living in Germany on News Media Coverage
This study explores how Jews in Germany perceive news coverage and its influence on third persons. Against the background of social identity theory, 29 semi-structured interviews with Jews demonstrated that they perceived sensationalist reports on antisemitism, overinsistent links to the Holocaust, the equation of Jews and Israel, and stereotypical portrayals of Jewish life. Such reports led participants to believe that non-Jews perceived Jews as…
Media criticism in the ethnomedial public sphere. An analysis of the reporting of Jüdische Allgemeine
About 75 years after the Holocaust, antisemitism is widespread in Germany. In 2019, about 2,000 antisemitic crimes were recorded in Germany, 13 percent more than in the previous year (Federal Ministry of the Interior, 2020). Against this background, it is plausible to assume that Germany's Jewish community closely monitors the development of antisemitism and the public opinion toward Jews. In doing so, the media play an important role-especially …
Advocating for Minority Inclusion: How German Journalists Conceive and Enact Their Roles When Reporting on Antisemitism
Antisemitism is a prototype of racially inspired hatred against minorities and a highly moral issue, particularly in Germany. Against this background, this qualitative study explored role conceptions and enactments among German journalists covering antisemitism. Interviews with 21 journalists indicated that their normally passive role conception became more interventionist when reporting on antisemitism. This more active role was enacted through …
The news expectation predicament: Comparing and explaining what audiences expect from the roles and reporting practices of reporters on right-wing extremism
News about right-wing extremism pertains to the media’s information and watchdog functions in democratic societies. Since audience orientation is important to the journalistic profession, it is important to know what different news audiences expect of journalists regarding their professional role and their reporting practices when it comes to media coverage of right-wing extremism. To bridge this research gap, by employing a quota sample represen…
Online propaganda use during Islamist radicalization
While a plethora of previous studies have described extremist propaganda content that seeks to radicalize individuals, there has been a lack of research on how individuals who have become Islamists perceive and describe the propaganda they have used. To address this issue and to explore the personal drivers and circumstances of propaganda usage, we conducted in-depth interviews (n = 44) with radicalized Muslim prisoners and former Islamists in Ge…
The topic of Islamism is obviously connected with fears and is therefore particularly relevant for tabloid journalism. Against this background, a qualitative content analysis of 249 articles on krone.at was conducted to investigate how one of the most widely read tabloid newspapers constructs the dangerousness of the Islamist scene in Vienna on the Internet. Using an analysis grid that distinguishes between tabloidization on the level of focus an…
Describing Perceptions of Media Influence among Radicalized Individuals: The Case of Jihadists and Non-Violent Islamists
This study is the first to examine how Islamists in different phases of radicalization perceive media influence. Based on interviews with 34 Islamist prisoners and 9 former Islamists, we found that radicalized individuals perceived themselves as being immune to influence by the news media, which they generally perceived as being hostile. In contrast, they believed that the media had a relatively strong effect on the general public, on political a…
From Interactions to the Mediatization of Politics. How the Relationships Between Journalists and Political Actors Explain Media Influences on Political Processes and the Presentation of Politics
The goal of this paper is to explain media impact on politics by focusing on characteristics of journalist-politician relationships. Based on the concept of political communication cultures, we present a model that assumes that four dimensions of a political communication culture affect media influences on the presentation of politics and on political processes. These characteristics of the journalist-politician relationships are assumed to depen…
Online news media and propaganda influence on radicalized individuals: Findings from interviews with Islamist prisoners and former Islamists
This study is the first to explore the twin influences of online propaganda and news media on Islamists. We conducted 44 in-depth interviews with cognitively and behaviorally radicalized Islamist prisoners in Austria as well as former Islamists in Germany and Austria. We found that online propaganda and news media had interdependent influences on Islamists’ rejections of non-Muslims and Western politics, as well as on their willingness to use vio…
Should the Media Be More or Less Powerful in Politics? Individual and Contextual Explanations for Politicians and Journalists
© 2018, Copyright © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. The normative question regarding whether the media should have more or less impact on politics, as viewed by politicians and journalists, is important assuming that norms about media influences can influence behaviors. The present study is the first that combines individual and structural factors that explain political actors’ and journalists’ normative views on the media’s influence on politi…
News and Islamist Radicalization Processes: Investigating Muslims’ Perceptions of Negative News Coverage of Islam
This study investigated how Muslims perceive negative news coverage of Islam and how these perceptions possibly contribute to radicalization processes. Utilizing qualitative interviews with former Islamists, Study 1 indicated that radicalized Muslims perceive a governmental infiltration of the media resulting in negative content. Analyses indicate that perceptual phenomena (hostile media, third person), negation, and anger play an important role …
Close, Dependent, and Out of Touch with the People? Investigating and Explaining Local Political Communication Cultures in a Multilevel Analysis
The relationship of political actors and journalists is a central topic in political communication research. However, it remains challenging to explain the different patterns of interaction observed in different contexts. To address that challenge, this study draws theoretically on the concept of “political communication cultures” and transfers the logic of internationally comparative research to the local level to analyze patterns and causes of …

The Meaning of Leaning: The Impact of Journalists’ Political Leaning on Active Role Perception and Satisfaction With Audiences and Editorial Policy
Based on the subset of a representative survey of journalists with an active role perception in Germany, this article shows that more liberal journalists within the subset have (a) a more active role conception than more conservative journalists, (b) they perceive stronger discrepancies between their active role and its fulfillment, and (c) they are, thus, less satisfied with audiences and editorial policy. The indirect effect of the political le…

The present article seeks out to contribute substantial new perspectives to this discussion by asking for the relevance of the political leaning of German journalists for their role perceptions and job satisfaction. Therefore, a secondary data analysis of the most recent representative survey (n=1536) of German journalists (Weischenberg et…
