Self-Reports of Soviet and American Children on Worry about the Threat of Nuclear War
Soviet and American early teens self-reported worries about on a questionnaire designed to disguise its intent. Soviet youth rated nuclear war as their greatest concern, with 89% indicating that they were very worried. American teens rated nuclear war second in intensity of concern to death of parent, with 39% very worried. Adolescents' Attitudes about Nuclear War
913 students from 6 junior and senior high schools in California responded to a 20-item questionnaire using 4-point Likert-type ratings to indicate their 3 greatest worries, to the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and nuclear-war-related items. On forced-choice items concerns were parents dying for 53.5%, getting bad grades for 37.0%, and nuclear war for 31.9%; however, the three greatest worries were parents dying for 54.9%, nuclear war for 32.8%,…
Soviet children and the threat of nuclear war
This study, the first undertaken by Western researchers with Soviet children on the subject of nuclear weapons, compared the questionnaire responses of 293 Soviet youngsters with those of 201 age-matched Californians. Interviews were conducted to supplement the questionnaire findings. Similarities and differences between the two samples are discussed in the context of how young people today perceive the threat of nuclear war

Pregnancy outcomes of Indochinese refugees, Santa Clara County, California
Birth certificates and a sample of hospital obstetric records for Indochinese refugees in Santa Clara County, CA, 1979-1980, were reviewed. Among 542 live births, the overall median birthweight of 3175 gm and 5.7 per cent rate of low birthweight were favorable; it is our impression that the more recent arrivals, especially Cambodians and Laotians, present at greater risk, lacking prenatal care, and have more infants of low birth rate and more pre…
