Sustainability of Hiking in Combination with Coaching in Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Quality of Life
Although strong evidence shows that physical inactivity and sedentary behavior are associated with many negative health outcomes, inactive lifestyles are still increasing. Consequently, new approaches must be developed to increase adherence to an active lifestyle and hence a longer life. Green exercise and health coaching could be effective ways to induce long-lasting lifestyle changes geared towards more physical activity. In this randomized con…
Understanding Psychological Reactance: New Developments and Findings
Since Brehm first proposed reactance theory in 1966, many studies have explored the remarkable psychological phenomenon of reactance, which Miron and Brehm reviewed in 2006. We present an overview of research that has been done since then. A variety of studies have provided interesting new insights into the theory, adding to what is known about the phenomenon of reactance and the processes activated when people are confronted with threats to thei…
When Suspicious Minds Go Political: Distrusting and Justifying the System at the Same Time
Drawing on the sensitivity to mean intentions model, we hypothesized that sensitivity to injustice from a victim's perspective (victim sensitivity) is negatively related to the acceptance of political reforms due to an inclination to attribute ulterior motives to policy makers. In Study 1 with a Canadian sample, initial evidence for this mediational model was obtained, as victim sensitivity uniquely predicted distrust of policy makers through gen…
Do physicians’ recommendations pull patients away from their preferred treatment options
Context and objective Shared decision making is especially advocated for preference‐sensitive decisions. We investigated whether physicians’ recommendations pull patients away from their preferred treatment option when making a preference‐sensitive decision. Design, participants and methods Inpatients ( N = 102 with schizophrenia, N = 101 with multiple sclerosis) were presented with a hypothetical scenario (the choice between two drugs). They wer…

Culture, self, and the emergence of reactance: Is there a “universal” freedom
The path or the goal? Decision vs. information focus in biased information seeking after preliminary decisions
Research on the phenomenon of selective exposure to information demonstrates that after preliminary or final decisions, people show a preference for supporting rather than conflicting information (confirmation bias). In this article, we examine conditions that increase or decrease distortions in the search for information. We report on four experiments indicating that the confirmation bias is influenced by whether people focus on their decision o…
The influence of price trend expectations on price trend perceptions: Why the Euro seems to make life more expensive
Expectancy confirmation in spite of disconfirming evidence: The case of price increases due to the introduction of the Euro
People in Germany overwhelmingly believe that the Euro introduction caused an overall price increase, however, no such increase actually took place. To investigate whether this disparity could be based on biased perceptions of the average price trend, four studies were conducted. Participants received two menus from a restaurant (one ‘old’ menu with German Mark (DM) prices and one ‘new’ menu with Euro prices) and were asked to estimate the price …
