  • How Hate Endures in a post-conflict Society

Open Access•Alba Jasini, Agneta Fischer•ARTICLE•Review of Philosophy and Psychology•2026

  • The gender gap in the care economy is larger in highly developed countries: Sociocultural explanations for paradoxical findings

    Open Access•Katharina Block, Maria I T Olsson et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2025

Despite the growing demand for care economy employees (e.g., nurses, teachers, and social workers), men remain underrepresented in these careers. While economically developed countries support more equal rights for women and men, their labor markets are highly gender segregated (Charles, 1992, 2003). We conducted a focused investigation of this paradoxical pattern in the care economy, testing whether gender gaps in care economy career interest ar…

  • Do Minorities’ Friendships with Majority Culture Members and Their Emotional Fit with Majority Culture Influence Each Other Over Time

Open Access•Alba Jasini, Jozefien De Leersnyder et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2024

Immigrant-origin minorities who have majority friends have emotions that fit the majority norm. However, previous research on the link between minorities’ emotional fit and their friendships with majority culture members has been cross-sectional. Hence, little is known about the directionality of the association and whether emotional fit facilitates minority inclusion. In a longitudinal study of 3216 minority and 2283 majority youth, we tested bi…

  • The composition of friendship networks predicts emotional fit among Turkish Belgian adolescents

Yeasle Lee, Alba Jasini et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2024

Having more majority than minority friends positively relates to emotional fit with the majority culture without negatively affecting their fit with the minority culture. These findings further support the idea that cultural emotion norms can both shape or be shaped by close relationships, particularly with friends during adolescence. • Majorities’ emotions acculturate too: The role of intergroup friendships and clarity of minority emotion norms

  • Gender Gap in Parental Leave Intentions: Evidence from 37 Countries

    Open Access•Maria I T Olsson, Sanne Van Grootel et al.•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 55

Despite global commitments and efforts, a gender‐based division of paid and unpaid work persists. To identify how psychological factors, national policies, and the broader sociocultural context contribute to this inequality, we assessed parental‐leave intentions in young adults (18–30 years old) planning to have children (N = 13,942; 8,880 identified as women; 5,062 identified as men) across 37 countries that varied in parental‐leave policies and…

  • Tuning in emotionally: Associations of cultural exposure with distal and proximal emotional fit in acculturating youth

Open Access•Alba Jasini, Jozefien De Leersnyder et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 35

The more immigrant minorities are exposed to the majority culture, the more their emotional pattern fits that of majority culture members—a phenomenon termed emotional acculturation . To assess emotional fit, earlier studies compared minorities’ emotional experience with that of separate samples of “distant” majority members in their country of residence. We added “proximal” fit with the emotional experience of majority members in their social en…

  • Why We Hate

Open Access•Agneta Fischer, Eran Halperin et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion Review•2018

We offer a functional perspective on hate, showing that hate has a unique pattern of appraisals and action tendencies. Hate is based on perceptions of a stable, negative disposition of persons or groups. We hate persons and groups more because of who they are, than because of what they do. Hate has the goal to eliminate its target. Hate is especially significant at the intergroup level, where it turns already devalued groups into victims of hate.…
