  • Tolerance as Social Practice in Antakya, Türkiye

    Open Access•Reşit Kışlıoğlu•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 74

In recent years , the study of intergroup relations has renewed its focus on tolerance as a lens for understanding diversity and difference. This study examines tolerance as a social practice in Antakya, a historically diverse Eastern Mediterranean city in Türkiye, situating the analysis within the legacies of the Ottoman millet system and Turkish nationhood. Drawing on social representations theory, it explores how tolerance is dialogically cons…

  • European Without Euros

Open Access•Sandra Obradović, Reşit Kışlıoğlu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 47

This paper examines how geopolitical, geoeconomic, and geocultural dynamics shape the symbolic boundaries of Europe and the psychological and political consequences of those boundaries. We extend traditional models of social identification by arguing that claims to group representativeness ‐ and the recognition of such claims ‐ are deeply informed by geopolitical contexts often neglected in mainstream psychological theory. Drawing on data from th…

  • Power, meta‐perceptions, and belonging

    Open Access•Sandra Obradović, Nihan Albayrak-Aydemir et al.•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2025•Cited by: 4•References: 28

Creating a shared group identification has been theorized as one pathway for overcoming intergroup divides within larger, superordinate contexts. Although self‐identification with superordinate groups has been extensively studied in political psychology, less attention has been paid to how others' recognition of our belonging shapes this process. The present paper examines the role of such perceived recognition for European identification across …

  • Greedy elites and poor lambs

Open Access•Pierre Bouchat, Laurent Licata et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Political…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 9

The present study examines current social representations associated with the origins of the Great War, a major event that has profoundly affected Europe. A survey conducted in 20 European countries (N = 1906 students in social sciences) shows a high consensus: The outbreak of the war is attributed to the warring nations’ leaders while the responsibility of the populations is minimized. Building on the concept of social representation of history …

In this paper we use a social representational perspective to consider the interplay between pacifist attitudes and representations of World War I, on a large sample of European students. WWI gave rise to pacifist movements across the globe. Across 10 European countries (N = 1347 undergraduate students), we invited participants to report the first five words that came to their mind when thinking about this event and measured their level of pacifi…

  • A century of victimhood

Open Access•Pierre Bouchat, Laurent Licata et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 47

The present study addresses antecedents and consequences of collective victimhood in the context of World War I (WWI) across 15 European nations ( N = 2423 social science students). Using multilevel analysis, we find evidence that collective victimhood is still present a hundred years after the onset of the war and can be predicted by WWI‐related objective indicators of victimization at national and family levels. This suggests that collective vi…
