  • The creation and validation of a Jazz Theory Measure: Implications for improvisation education

    Open Access•Brian E Russell, Charles R Ciorba•ARTICLE•International Journal of Music…•2022

The purpose of this study was to create and validate a measure for jazz theory knowledge assessment. The Jazz Theory Measure (JTM) was created by exploring publications on jazz improvisation instruction and research studies that utilized jazz theory as a significant aspect of the study (i.e., dependent variable, independent variable, data collection). Latent jazz theory components (i.e., Key Knowledge, Scale Knowledge, and Chord Knowledge) were i…

  • A Proposed Model of Jazz Theory Knowledge Acquisition

    Open Access•Charles R Ciorba, Brian E Russell•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2014•References: 8

The purpose of this study was to test a hypothesized model that proposes a causal relationship between motivation and academic achievement on the acquisition of jazz theory knowledge. A reliability analysis of the latent variables ranged from .92 to .94. Confirmatory factor analyses of the motivation (standardized root mean square residual [SRMR] = .067) and jazz theory (SRMR = .063) measures indicated a good fit of the predicted model to the obs…

Most research on legislative decisionmaking has focused on legislatures with single-member district systems, but much less is known about legislatures with multiple-member district systems. This study compares a multiple-member legislative chamber, the Arizona House of Representatives, to a single-member system, the Arizona Senate. First, we examine the ideological preferences across the two chambers, and we find that the House system produces mo…
