  • Design, Meaning and Choice in Direct Democracy

Shauna Reilly•BOOK•Design, Meaning and Choice in…•2016

Design, Meaning and Choice in Direct Democracy examines the link between political knowledge and participation in direct democracy in the United States. Presenting insights on the different behaviours of the petitioner, the ballot and the voter and using quantitative, qualitative and experimental methodological approaches, Shauna Reilly evaluates the use of direct democracy and why, despite the power of these measures, there is such low turnout i…

  • Linguistic accommodations and electoral participation

    Shauna Reilly, Jeffrey Mark Zimmerman•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 8

The purpose of this study was to advance the understanding of the influence geo-political events and legislation can have on the accommodation of minority language voters. Particularly, this study focused on the effects of (1) the Voting Rights Act of 1965 on minority language voters in the USA, and (2) World War I on minority language voters in Austria. We use a most similar systems design with our case studies. The results from the most similar…

  • Using Google Search Data for State Politics Research

    Open Access•Shauna Reilly, Sean Richey et al.•ARTICLE•State Politics & Policy Quarterly•2012•Cited by: 18•References: 10

Google Insights for Search provides a new and rich data source for political scientists, which may be particularly useful for state politics scholars. We outline the prior uses of Google Insights for Search in social and health sciences, explain the data-generating process, and test for the first time the validity of this data for state politics research. Our empirical test of validity shows that Google searches for ballot measures' names and top…

  • Ballot Question Readability and Roll-Off

    Open Access•Shauna Reilly, Sean Richey•ARTICLE•Political Research Quarterly•2011•Cited by: 32•References: 25

Ballot questions often feature obscure and legalistic language that is difficult to comprehend. Because the language of ballot questions is often unclear, the authors hypothesize that questions with lower readability will have higher roll-off because voters will not answer questions they do not understand. The authors use an objective measure of readability to code readability scores for 1,211 state-level ballot questions from 1997 to 2007. Using…

  • The Electoral Benefits of Distributive Spending

    Open Access•Jeffrey Lazarus, Shauna Reilly•ARTICLE•Political Research Quarterly•2010•Cited by: 39•References: 14

Prior studies search for evidence that distributive spending influences Congress members’ vote shares but find limited evidence. The authors argue that Democratic and Republican members each benefit from different types of distributive projects. Democrats benefit from delivering spending projects (what most people think of as “pork”) to their constituents, while many Republican members benefit from delivering contingent liabilities (in which the …
