  • Is there ethnic discrimination in Roma children’s access to sports clubs in Hungary? Evidence from field experiments in basketball, volleyball, and soccer

Open Access•Borbála Takács, Luca Váradi et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2024

In this paper, we examine children’s ethnic discrimination in access to sport. We conducted two field experiments to test whether Roma applicants get greater rejection rates when applying to sport clubs and whether this rate is higher in case Roma applicants have a lower-class background. Basketball, volleyball, and soccer coaches were contacted by e-mail using Roma and non-Roma sounding names, requesting to participate in a trial practice. Previ…

Values, which serve as fundamental motivators for attitudes and behaviours, have been extensively studied in social sciences. In post‐socialist Budapest, gentrification has remained modest for decades after the regime change (1989) due to politically controlled economic relations besides marketisation. Political control was transformed but maintained after 2010 in the illiberal Orbán regime. Populist housing privatisation for tenants, insufficient regulation of rental housing, mortgage policy and urban rehabilitations with systemic corruption caused moderate level of ho…

Exploring the reasons behind people's migration decisions has always been a core topic of migration studies. However, there is little scientific information on Iranian citizens' migration plans; therefore, this study aims to fill this research gap. Our goal is to explore the main factors that push people to leave Iran, their reasons for seeking a new life abroad, their anticipations about their journey from Iran to the destination countries, and …

  • Personally, I feel sorry, but professionally, I don't have a choice.”1 Understanding the drivers of anti-Roma discrimination on the rental housing market

Open Access•Luca Váradi, Blanka Szilasi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2023•References: 8

The aim of our study is to assess the drivers of discriminatory behaviors of real-estate agents and private landlords toward prospective Roma tenants, relying on qualitative data from Hungary. Though there is a broad literature on the forms and frequency of discrimination, we know much less about the question of why people discriminate . Previous research suggests that discrimination on the basis of ethnicity is widespread in Hungary. To understa…

Open Access•Gábor Simonovits, Bori Simonovits et al.•ARTICLE•Political Science Research and…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 12

To what extent can civil rights NGOs protect ethnic minorities against unequal treatment? We study this question by combining an audit experiment of 1260 local governments in Hungary with an intervention conducted in collaboration with a major Hungarian civil rights NGO. In the audit experiment we demonstrated that Roma individuals were about 13 percent-points less likely to receive responses to information requests from local governments, and th…

The specialty of our paper, based on the Hungarian survey of ISSP 2017 is that (1) we only focus on a single (the planning) phase of the migration process, (2) we use the concept of network capital, which fits the strategic features of the migration potential phenomenon, (3) we estimate the impact of the size of Ego’s network and that of the respondents’ strong and weak ties on the migration potential separately, and (4) within the strong ties we…
