Direct Democracy as a Call for Social Engagement in Hybrid Regimes: The Case of Student-Led Protests in Serbia
This article examines a recent wave of student-led protests in Serbia and describes how direct democratic practices—participatory plenums—have emerged as adaptive responses to political constraints in a hybrid regime. Sparked by a tragic infrastructural failure that caused the death of 16 people in Novi Sad in November 2024, the mobilization quickly spread across major university centers, combining blockades of higher-education institutions with …
Intuitions as a causal factor in determining the impacts of contingent events
Common good, public interest and the commons: Historical perspective on conceptual delineations and contemporary dilemmas
The paper endeavours to offer a closer definition of the concepts of common good, public interest and the commons, analysing their usage in a contemporary and historical perspective. The common good has been one of the key subjects of moral and political philosophy since ancient times. Today, the term public interest is often used as a synonym for the term common good. However, we will try to show that they carry a somewhat different meaning. A r…
Intuitions, trust, and social change in times of crisis
In this paper, I will investigate the complex relationship between intuition, trustworthiness, and trust. I will first examine some of the more prevalent accounts of trust which either (over)emphasize the cognitive aspect of generating trustworthiness, or indeed acknowledge the importance of affects and emotions, but only as part of a neatly organized dual structure ? which is in essence complementary with the cognitive understanding of how we st…

The Structure of Common Sense and Its Relation to Engagement and Social Change – A Pragmatist Account
There are three approaches one can take toward the epistemic value of common sense. The pessimists will argue that common sense, due to its intrinsic tendency to reproduce prejudice and ideology, should somehow be displaced. Conversely, the optimist will maintain that common sense is a valuable type of knowledge because it prevents us from overlooking evident practical problems. This article aims to show that (a) neither of these two widespread a…
Contingency and Social Change: Collective Engagement in Conditions of Radical Uncertainty
This paper addresses the nexus between contingency, social engagement and change, through investigating the potential of severe (“disruptive”) contingency to bring about new forms of joint agency. By challenging Boltanski's notion of existential tests (which can only be experienced in isolation), the paper argues that social actors can experience disruptive contingent events in an inherently intersubjective manner. Although they severely hinder s…
Theory caught up in dialectics: Some reflections on Asger Sørensen’s capitalism, alienation and critique
This paper presents three interconnected examinations of Asger S?rensen?s arguments in Capitalism, Alienation and Critique, which thematize S?rensen?s overarching understanding of the relationship between theory and practice: his general methodological perspective on critical theory, its distinctive epistemology and its anchoring in the empirical world. The paper authors each try to push S?rensen on these crucial points by considering how S?rense…
Between Heterotopy and Ideology: On the Realities of Reality TV in Serbia
In this paper we will try to explain the phenomenon of reality TV using Foucault's concept of heterotopia. First, we will consider some of the major theoretical dilemmas that go together with the emergence of this television format, which primarily concerns the degree of democratization of contemporary media, as well as the degree of exploitation of "ordinary actors". We will also claim that ambivalence and hybridity are an inherent feature of te…
The Hybrid Discourse of the Serbian Antibureaucratic Revolution
This article investigates the discursive logic of the antibureaucratic revolution through discourse analysis of three Serbian dailies: Politika , Borba , and Večernje Novosti. We conceptualize this discursive logic as a “hybrid discourse,” employed by Slobodan Milošević’s faction of the political elite and by prominent Serbian press outlets in their discussions and reporting on the diverse Serbian protest movements of the day. The core of the hyb…
Critique potential of common sense in Goffman’s frame analysis
In this paper, I will try to appraise the critique potential of Erving Goffman?s sociology. The starting hypothesis will be that Goffman?s understanding of common sense offered in Frame Analysis opens the possibility of attaining a critical insight into the structural givens of everyday practice. I will also try to show that Goffman?s understanding of common sense was under heavy influence of pragmatism and phenomenology - and that the often-over…
Liberalism between Politics and Epistemology: A Discussion of Alessandro Ferrara’s The Democratic Horizon: Hyperpluralism and the Renewal of Political Liberalism
In this symposium, Alessandro Ferrara’s recent book The Democratic Horizon: Hyperpluralism and the Renewal of Political Liberalism – an attempt to expand the framework of Rawls’ political liberalism in order to enable it to meet the challenge of today’s hyperpluralism – is discussed from a variety of angles by four contributors. Among the themes addressed are the potential of political liberalism for grounding a critical attitude; the different p…
Pragmatic epistemology and the community of engaged actors
In this paper I will explore the relation between engagement and social science. I will try to argue that positivist epistemology found in the early days of social sciences still greatly influences our understanding of social engagement. In the first part of the paper, I will analyze the epistemology of social sciences advocated by Fourier and Saint-Simon and try to show that, for them, scientific method was primarily the means for taming social …
Smurfs, cyborgs and changelings: Prospects of human enhancement retrospected
This article stems from the impression of being condemned to late and moralizing reactions in regard to advances in the life sciences. We suggest a return to a speculative and theoretical approach in posing the question(s) of the limit of possible thinking of the enhanced human. This return allows for the possibility to show, not just inductively, but “clearly and distinctly,” the specific justifications and lines of reasoning of anthropocentric …
A pragmatic critique of the conception of everyday praxis within Jeffrey Alexander’s cultural sociology
This paper tries to critically analyse Jeffrey Alexander?s cultural sociology. In the first part of the paper I will examine Alexander?s conception of hermeneutical structuralism which argues that conventional systemic sociology and richness of experience found in everyday praxis can be reconciled. In the next section I will provide a critique of this kind of approach to social theory and maintain that Alexander?s sociology is, in principle, redu…
Public space and free action: Foucault vs. Lefebvre
In this paper we will try to offer a systematic insight into the relation of everyday practices and public space. By examining the work of two of the most influential authors in this field, Foucault and Lefebvre, we will try to provide a theoretical explanation of intuition that (public) space represents one of the key constitutive elements of free action. In the first part of the paper, we will consider Foucault?s notion of heterotopia in the in…
Rorty and contemporary social theory
The aim of this paper is to show certain aspects of Rorty?s philosophy that are relevant to social theory, and also to point out the most important divergences of Rorty?s insights from postmodern understanding of social reality. Therefore, in the first part of the paper I will examine both Rorty?s philosophy of edification and all relevant criticisms to his view of philosophy ?as a communication of mankind?. Furthermore, I will try to establish t…
Structurational aspect of Georg Simmel's sociology
In this paper attempt will be made in explaining some basic notions of Simmel's sociology, especially those regarding his very complex comprehension of money and causality in history. In analysis of his work, I will argue that Simmel stands very close to the contemporary structurational point of view, and that there are three levels of freedom and structural givens (overlapping each other) in society. These are: meta-theoretical level, level of i…
