Too Many PhD Graduates or Too Few Academic Job Openings
The academic job market has become increasingly competitive for PhD graduates. In this note, we ask the basic question of ‘Are we producing more PhDs than needed?’ We take a systems approach and offer a ‘birth rate’ perspective: professors graduate PhDs who later become professors themselves, an analogue to how a population grows. We show that the reproduction rate in academia is very high. For example, in engineering, a professor in the US gradu…
Disasters
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study and review some major impacts of the disasters during the past 105 years and develop a new theoretical classification of disasters. Design/methodology/approach A detailed study of disasters in the world during the period (1900‐2005) has been obtained from the recent published sources. In that period more than 40 lessons have been reported based on statistical data analysis of disasters. Furthermore, a…
Knowledge of Meaning
Current textbooks in formal semantics are all versions of, or introductions to, the same paradigm in semantic theory: Montague Grammar. Knowledge of Meaning is based on different assumptions and a different history. It provides the only introduction to truth- theoretic semantics for natural languages, fully integrating semantic theory into the modern Chomskyan program in linguistic theory and connecting linguistic semantics to research elsewhere …
Education via advanced technologies
Advanced technologies like the World Wide Web offer interesting opportunities for improving higher education. A study done at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) focused on these matters and made several specific recommendations. Since this study was completed, a new center was established at MIT to coordinate and promote the use of advanced technologies in education, and a high-level council on educational technology was formed. Afte…

Relationships Between Melodic Error Detection, Melodic Dictation, and Melodic Sightsinging
This study investigated the competencies of undergraduate music majors in the three aural skills of melodic error detection, melodic dictation, and melodic sightsinging. Three criterion-referenced aural tasks were developed for comparative evaluation of these competencies within the single musical parameter of pitch for diatonic, chromatic, and “atonal” melodic styles. Significant relationships were obtained among nearly all task and subtask scor…
