    Open Access•W A Speck•ARTICLE•Parliamentary History•2012•Cited by: 2

This article reviews the literature on the Sacheverell affair as it stood when it was delivered as a paper to the symposium held in March 2010 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of his impeachment. The basic narrative and prevalent interpretation of its significance were established by the late Geoffrey Holmes in his monograph The Trial of Doctor Sacheverell published in 1973. Holmes placed it in the context of a crisis in Church and state brou…

  • Robert Southey, Benjamin Disraeli and Young England

    Open Access•W A Speck•ARTICLE•History•2010

Although the ideology of the Young England movement has been traced to a variety of sources, the influence of Robert Southey on it has largely gone unnoticed. Yet he shared with the Young England group a penchant for the middle ages. Like them, he was not nostalgic for the medieval era just for its own sake but wished to revive its alleged sense of community to offset the perceived social alienation of the new industrial age. While a leader of th…

  • In No One's Shadow: British Politics in the Age of Anne and the Writing of the History of the House of Commons

    Open Access•D W Hayton, David Hayton et al.•ARTICLE•Parliamentary History•2009

The publication in 1967 of Geoffrey Holmes's masterpiece, British Politics in the Age of Anne , effectively demolished the interpretation of the ‘political structure’ of early 18th‐century England that had been advanced by the American historian R.R. Walcott as a conscious imitation of Sir Lewis Namier. But to understand the significance of Holmes's work solely in an anti‐Namierite context is misleading. For one thing, his book only completed a p…

    Open Access•W A Speck•ARTICLE•Literature Compass•2008•References: 2

The scholarly edition of Robert Southey's letters currently being prepared by co‐editors Lynda Pratt and Timothy Fulford for publication by Romantic Circles is a major desideratum. Although 7000 of his letters have survived, some 1500 remain entirely unpublished while most of those which have appeared in print were poorly edited. This has led scholars seriously astray, as an examination of Thackeray's use of Southey's correspondence demonstrates

The term ‘Augustan’, which students of English literature have found convenient to describe writers and their works in a period stretching roughly from Dryden to Dr Johnson, can also be useful to historians for defining the century between the Restoration of Charles II and the accession of George III. These were the dates I had in mind when I chose the title of this paper, but although I have kept 1660 as a starting point the terminal date is nea…

ONE OF THE MANY PUZZLES about Bernard Mandeville's Fable of the Bees is why it had wait until its third edition before attracting attention, and then immediately acquired notoriety. The initial version, his poem The Grumbling Hive, seems have sunk without trace of criticism, favorable or hostile, when it appeared in 1705. The first expansion, in the form of the Fable, went through two editions in 1714, so presumably attracted readers, but again d…
