A short form of the Crisis in Family Systems (CRISYS) in a racially diverse sample of pregnant women
Assessing stressful life events in large-scale epidemiologic studies is challenged by the need to measure potential stressful events in a reasonably comprehensible manner balanced with burden on participants and research staff. The aim of this paper was to create a short form of the Crisis in Family Systems-Revised (CRISYS-R) plus 17 acculturation items, a measure that captures contemporary life stressors across 11 domains. Social Needs Screening and Referral Program at a Large US Public Hospital System, 2017
Many health care providers and systems are developing and implementing processes to screen patients for social determinants of health and to refer patients to appropriate nonclinical and community-based resources. The largest public health care system in the United States, New York City Health + Hospitals, piloted such a program in 2017. A qualitative evaluation yielded insights into the implementation and feasibility of such screening and referr…

This case study provides a mid-course assessment of the Bronx Health REACH faith-based initiative four years into its implementation. The study uses qualitative methods to identify lessons learned and to reflect on the benefits and challenges of using a community-based participatory approach for the development and evaluation of a faith-based program designed to address health disparities. Key findings concern the role of pastoral leadership, the…

This essay explores the challenges of implementation in a networked institutional setting and incentives to induce coordination between agencies and promote quality implementation. It describes the national evaluation of the Assuring Better Child Health and Development program, a state‐based program intended to increase and enhance…
Validation of the Crisis in Family Systems-Revised, a Contemporary Measure of Life Stressors
The objectives of this study were to establish the validity of the Crisis in Family Systems–Revised, a recently developed measure of contemporary life stressors, using the same validation technique as in the original validation and to provide further evidence of construct validity by assessing its relationship to socioeconomic status and residential location. We conducted 124 in-person interviews with parents in three outpatient pediatric asthma …

Groups as social network members
In a study of the link between physical disability and social relationships among the elderly, questions about social network and social support evoked a surprisingly large number of group responses. People mentioned "my grandchildren," "the people in my building," "people at the senior center," and other groups in ways that suggested that the real unit of support was extraindividual and could not be accurately understood by reference to individu…
