  • Intermunicipal Cooperation in the Netherlands

    Open Access•Pieter‐jan Klok, Bas Denters et al.•ARTICLE•Public Administration Review•2018•Cited by: 20•References: 11

This article examines the effects of the structure of intermunicipal cooperatives (IMCs) on the perceived transaction costs and benefits of IMCs. Hypotheses based on a polycentric theory of regional governance are tested using data from Dutch municipalities. The findings are mixed. In line with polycentric theory, networks characterized by a multiplicity of territorial scales reduce IMC transaction costs. Contrary to polycentric theory, however, …

  • Councillor attitudes to ‘interactive’ governance. Evidence from a survey in five Dutch urban municipalities

Bas Denters, Sebastianus A H Denter et al.•CHAPTER•Regieren•2012

With the notable exception of Switzerland (see Bützer 2007; Ladner 2005), local government in western democratic systems traditionally has been based on a model of representative democracy. In this model a key role is reserved for the members of a directly elected municipal council who are made responsible for translating the needs and demands of citizens into binding collective decisions. These decisions are subsequently implemented under the co…

  • Citizens’ Initiatives

Judith Bakker, Bas Denters et al.•ARTICLE•Local Government Studies•2012•Cited by: 28•References: 17

In the context of drastic cutbacks many Dutch municipalities consider citizens' initiatives (CIs) as an attractive alternative for municipal policies aimed at improving the livability and safety in neighbourhoods, simultaneously building responsible citizenship. In this paper we combine different theoretical perspectives to analyse the institutional settings in which CIs are being realised, and how municipalities try to facilitate such initiative…

  • Power and Interactive Policy-Making

    Open Access•Jan P M Van Tatenhove, Jan Van Tatenhove et al.•ARTICLE•Public Administration•2010•Cited by: 13•References: 10

A number of countries use forms of interactive policy-making to increase the influence of citizens on decision making. Since there has also been an increase in citizen participation in The Netherlands over the last decade, in this paper, we provide a comparative analysis of 8 interactive projects initiated by the Dutch central government. The central aim of the paper is to understand processes of power in interactive policy-making. We do so by ra…

  • Rebuilding Roombeek

    Open Access•Bas Denters, Sebastianus A H Denter et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2010•Cited by: 12•References: 23

In 2000, a deprived inner-city district of Enschede (the Netherlands) known as Roombeek was largely devastated by an explosion of a fireworks storage depot. This article evaluates the efforts made by the municipality of Enschede to actively involve the former residents in the reconstruction planning. The results indicate that through a well-ordered process and a considered mobilization campaign, the initiators of the participatory planning proces…

  • Strengthening the Councillor as a Representative and Scrutiniser

Merel De Groot, Bas Denters et al.•ARTICLE•Local Government Studies•2010•Cited by: 14•References: 36

In 2002 the Dutch Ministry of the Interior enacted a new Local Government Act. The introduction of the new legislation was supported by a large-scale Innovation Program. The main objective of this institutional reform in local government was to improve the responsiveness and democratic accountability of municipalities by changing the role orientations and role behaviour of local councillors. The first question we address in this paper is whether …

  • Full participation, drive and quality in the rebuilding of Roombeek

    Bas Denters, Sebastianus A H Denter et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Research & Practice•2009

Inclusive and effective participation is the pipe dream of innumerable regeneration managers. While often seen as a multipurpose tool that can secure support, mobilize efforts and adjust measures to local wants and needs, in practice it is often hard to make residents show up and roll up their sleeves. The rebuilding of the neighbourhood of Roombeek illustrates that the pipe dream may be attainable all the same

  • The Institutional Embedding of Interactive Policy Making

    Open Access•Jurian Edelenbos, Pieter-Jan Klok et al.•ARTICLE•The American Review of Public…•2008•Cited by: 12•References: 15

In this article, the authors address citizen involvement at the central government level in the Netherlands. Through comparative research in which they systematically analyze eight interactive projects in three governmental departments, the authors especially pay attention to the relation between the informal character of interactive policy making and formal democratic decision-making procedures. They call this the “institutional embedding of int…
