This study explored influences on the housing choices of retirees. Sixteen convergent interviewing processes were conducted in inner urban, suburban, coastal and rural locations in South Australia and New South Wales, Australia. In each location, separate interview processes were conducted with retirement village residents and retirees living in the surrounding community. Short Trips and Long Days: Safety and Health in Short-Haul Trucking
This paper looks at the role and influence of contingent employment among short-haul truckers, an occupational group that has been little studied to date. A 2003 survey of Australian short-haul drivers examined the predictors of health and safety outcomes for all drivers and provided comparative information on the working hours, occupational safety and health, and work-life conflict of permanent employees, temporary (casual) employees, and owner-…

This paper examines the impact of precarious employment on working hours, work-life conflict and health by comparing casual employees to full-time, "permanent" employees working…
Residential Associations as State Actors: Regulating the Impact of Gated Communities on Nonmembers
T]he gated and walled community is a new phenomenon on the social scene, and, in the spirit of the foregoing pronouncement, the ingenuity of the law will not be deterred in redressing grievances which arise, as here, from a needless and exaggerated insistence upon private property rights... [that] results in a pointless discrimination which causes serious financial detriment to another.' Thirteen years later, the optimism of a California Court of…

The Law of Appropriateness: An Approach to a General Theory of Intergovernmental Relations
D uring a number of years of studying and lecturing about the American federal system, I have been dismayed by the virtually total absence of any formalized statement of the principles underlying its inner workings. True, there has been no lack of published work on the subject of American intergovernmental relations on the contrary one feels overwhelmed by its bulk yet, most of the writing has been essentially normative, describing the structure …
