Keeping Score: Predictive Analytics in Policing
Predictive analytics in policing is a data-driven approach to ( a) characterizing crime patterns across time and space and ( b) leveraging this knowledge for the prevention of crime and disorder. This article outlines the current state of the field, providing a review of forecasting tools that have been successfully applied by police to the task of crime prediction. We then discuss options for structured design and evaluation of a predictive poli…
Estimating Intervention Effects in Varying Risk Settings: Do Police Raids Reduce Illegal Drug Dealing at Nuisance Bars
This paper investigates the effectiveness of police raids in reducing drug dealing in and around nuisance bars. We examine effects of both dosage (number of raids) and duration (months) of the intervention, as well as the conditioning effects of land use and population characteristics in shaping the underlying risk levels of drug dealing in the target and surrounding areas. Results indicate that the police intervention suppresses levels of drug d…

The United States is increasingly becoming an information society. Over half of the labor force is now engaged in work requiring some level of information processing. Computers are the engines powering this information society and, consequently, their diffusion is considerable and growing. Moreover, from the beginning of the computer age, government has been at the forefront of computer utilization. Given the extensive diffusion of computers thro…
Use of Special Event Data in Government Information Systems
Special event data are descriptions of extraordinary events that are important to the management of an organization. Such data explain or predict pattern interruptions in the time series data of an organization's performance measures; hence, they are useful, and perhaps vital, for explanation, program evaluation, and forecasting. Due to the fiscal stress being experienced in government today, it is becoming critical to engage more in decision mak…
Optimal Control Strategies for Air Quality Standards and Regulatory Policy
The setting of air quality standards for classes of air pollution in a region is one approach to the protection of public health and welfare by defining limits on levels of pollution in the air. We present methods to determine regional emission regulations that are (1) feasible in the sense that they lead to compliance with air quality standards and (2) optimal in the sense that the total economic impact due to implementation is minimized. Under …
