The Shared Traumatic and Professional Posttraumatic Growth Inventory
Purpose: While there are established instruments offering psychometrically sound measurement of primary or secondary trauma, none capture the essence of dual exposure for mental health professionals living and working in traumatological environments. Methods: This study examined the experience of 244 mental health workers who lived and worked in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. An instrument, the Shared Trauma and Professional Posttraumatic …

Buffering Effects of Family and Friend Support on Associations between Partner Unsupportive Behaviors and Coping among Women with Breast Cancer
This study examined the role of family and friend support in moderating the association between partner unsupportive behaviors and avoidance coping and coping efficacy experienced by women with breast cancer. This study also evaluated whether partner unsupportive behaviors had an indirect effect on patient distress via patient avoidance coping and coping efficacy. One hundred and forty women with recently diagnosed breast cancer who were either m…
Intrusion, Avoidance, and Psychological Distress Among Individuals With Cancer
OBJECTIVE: The goal of the study was to examine the utility of Creamer's cognitive processing theory of trauma in a sample of individuals undergoing treatment for cancer. This theory proposes that avoidance is a maladaptive strategy of dealing with intrusive thoughts about a traumatic experience and suggests that avoidance mediates the relation between intrusive thoughts and later psychological distress. The role of disease-related factors, speci…
Single Mothers in Low-Wage Jobs: Financial Strain, Parenting, and Preschoolers' Outcomes
Using data from an ongoing study of 93 single Black mothers of preschoolers who had been welfare recipients, but were employed in low-wage jobs at baseline, this study tests a model of how maternal education, economic conditions (earnings and financial strain), and the availability of instrumental support influence maternal psychological functioning, parenting, and child development. Results indicate that maternal educational attainment was posit…
Public Opinion About Aids Before and After the 1988 U.S. Government Public Information Campaign
In October, 1987, the Centers for Disease Control mounted a massive public information campaign to alert the public to the dangers of AIDS and to provide information about its transmission and prevention. Using data from two Gallup surveys, one just before the campaign began and the other several months after its conclusion, we examine changes in public information and misinformation about transmission, in concern about AIDS as an epidemic, and i…

The Effect of Interviewer Characteristics and Expectations on Response
This study reports on two sets of findings related to interviewer effects, derived from a national RDD sample of the adult population. Two Determinants of Fertility Decline: A Test of Competing Models
A natural time-dependent similarity measure for two trajectories is their average distance at corresponding times. We give algorithms for computing the most similar subtrajectories under this measure, assuming the two trajectories are given as two polygonal, possibly self-intersecting lines with time stamps. For the case when a minimum duration of the subtrajectories is specified and the subtrajectories must start at corresponding times, we give …
Community Standards of Patent Offensiveness: Public Opinion Data and Obscenity Law
Public opinion data are used to empirically derive general “community standards of patent offensiveness” for different types of communities. These data indicate that such standards become more restrictive in the less urbanized, less populated areas of the country. The relevance of these data to policy-formation is also considered. Marc B. Glassman is an independent Research Consultant and Book Review Editor of the Public Opinion Quarterly. The au…
