    Philip Cole•ARTICLE•Representation•1991

In March this year the European Parliament (EP) re-elected its Staff Committee using a list system of PR. The working of the system illustrates some of the defects of list systems in general. The composition of the EP's Staff Committee and the method of electing it are set out in the 'Rules governing representation of the staff of the European Parliament Secretariat' (29.1.1987), hereinafter: 'Rules'. The Staff Committee is re-elected every two y…

  • A prospective follow-up study of cancer mortality in relation to serum DDT

    Harland Austin, J E Keil et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1989•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Serum DDT and DDE levels were measured in 919 subjects in 1974 and 1975. Two-hundred and nine of the subjects died, including 54 from cancer, during a 10-year prospective follow-up period. There was no relation between either overall mortality or cancer mortality and increasing serum DDT levels. There was weak evidence of a positive relation between respiratory cancer mortality and serum DDT. The literature on DDT and human cancer is reviewed, an…

In a nested case-control study of nuclear workers, 82 brain cancer cases were compared with 328 matched controls to investigate the possible association with nonoccupational risk factors such as histories of epilepsy or head injury. We observed a moderately strong association between brain cancer occurrence and history of epilepsy (OR = 5.7, 95 per cent CI: 1.0, 32.1), but did not find a positive association with previous head injury (OR = 0.9, 9…

In 1973 a second questionnaire was mailed to 37,292 of these women, including all OC users and an equal number of non-users matched on age, parity, education, and town of residence. This q…

  • Factors affecting response to postal questionnaires

    S Kaplan, Samuel J Kaplan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1970•References: 3

Epidemiological studies of chronic diseases often use data gathered individually from many persons, rather than remaining restricted to pre-recorded data. Generally this is done by personal interview, an expensive, time-consuming procedure. The increasing educational level and social conscious- ness of the population suggest that a carefully designed, highly objective postal questionnaire could substitute for an interview. However, the validity o…
