A growing body of large-N cross-national studies has identified key predictors of environmental behavior. Adopting a social dilemma perspective, where individuals must choose collective over self-interest to act pro-environmentally, integrated national datasets for 30 countries are used to examine the effects of generalized trust, trust in government, leftism, and post-materialism on three types of environmental behavior (intended action, informa…

  • Neighborhood Association Participation and Formal Volunteering in Japan

Open Access•Hiromi Taniguchi, Gül Aldikaçti Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 20

We examine the effect of participation in neighborhood association (NHA) activities on volunteering using the 2010 Japanese General Social Survey data. We find that controlling for established predictors of formal volunteering such as demographic and socioeconomic variables, NHA association participation, either operationalized as a dichotomous or interval variable, positively predicts volunteering. Moreover, some of the established predictors of…

  • The Effects of Social Trust and Institutional Trust on Formal Volunteering and Charitable Giving in Japan

Open Access•Hiromi Taniguchi, Gül Aldikaçti Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2012•Cited by: 26•References: 12

This study is part of the growing literature on the effects on civic engagement of attitudinal predictors, such as trust, along with structural predictors. Drawing data from the 2005 Japanese General Social Survey, it examines the association between trust and the probabilities of formal volunteering and charitable giving. A bivariate probit analysis of the data suggests that trust, institutional trust in particular, matters more to predict givin…

  • Good Jobs, Good Deeds

Open Access•Gül Aldikaçti Marshall, Gül Aldıkaçtı Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 14

While research has shown that having a “good” job significantly promotes formal volunteering, we have limited knowledge of how this paid work-to-volunteer work relationship may differ between men and women. Based on the gender-identification spillover theory, we hypothesize that because of the societal expectations that women should be caring, giving and communal, positive job traits such as authority and autonomy promote women’s volunteering mor…

  • Gender Quotas and the Press in Turkey

    Gül Aldıkaçtı Marshall•ARTICLE•South European Society & Politics•2010

In 2004, an amendment to the Turkish Constitution advocating gender quotas was rejected by parliament. The press actively participated in public debates on the issue. A textual analysis of the coverage of this issue by four national newspapers shows that the press framed gender quotas as either preferential treatment or positive discrimination. Furthermore, they couched these frames within the larger ideological struggle between Islamism and secu…

  • Ideology, Progress, and Dialogue

    Open Access•Gül Aldikaçti Marshall, Gül Aldıkaçtı Marshall•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2005•Cited by: 11•References: 7

Using documentary analysis and in-depth interviews, this article compares how prosecular feminist and Islamist women's groups in Turkey approach the issues of head covering and work. The comparison reveals that Islamist women either selectively appropriate feminist views or contest them by using feminist arguments against feminists. However, this in itself does not expin why feminist and reformist Islamist women who share surprisingly similar com…
