  • Boom to bust reconstructing the Spanish economy

    Keith Salmon•ARTICLE•International Journal of Iberian…•2010•Cited by: 3

In 2008, a decade of strong and sustained growth in Spain came to an end as the economy fell into recession. This article charts the passage of the economy into recession and examines conditions in the financial system, property market and labour market that were peculiar to Spain. Half the financial system was subject to considerable political interference, a property market bubble was allowed to develop and the labour market had developed a dua…

  • Boom to bust Reconstructing the Spanish economy

    Keith Salmon•ARTICLE•International Journal of Iberian…•2010•Cited by: 1

Recession in Spain led to intervention by the government to stimulate the economy, a response that was replicated around the world. But as public finances deteriorated, financial markets and some policy makers demanded credible austerity measures (exit strategies) to reduce growing public sector debts. There was particular external pressure on Spain since any sovereign debt default would have serious repercussions at least throughout the European…

  • Adapting to European enlargement

    Keith Salmon•ARTICLE•International Journal of Iberian…•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Spain has enjoyed large net inflows of public funds from the European Union (EU) since accession in 1986. These funds have contributed to a strong growth performance, a largely successful economic transition, and economic convergence. Enlargement of the EU has transformed Spain's relative position from that of a poor country to that of a middle-income one, thus reducing its claim on EU funding. Lower levels of funding under the next EU financial …

  • Spanish foreign direct investment, transnationals and the redefinition of the Spanish business realm

    Keith Salmon•ARTICLE•International Journal of Iberian…•2001•Cited by: 1

Spanish outward direct investment grew substantially during the 1990s, transforming some Spanish businesses from national players to transnationals and adding a distinctive Latin American dimension to an essentially European economy. More broadly foreign investment contributed towards further globalisation. This paper examines the process of outward direct investment, the logic behind it, and some of its implications for the Spanish economy. It c…

  • Privatisation of State-Owned Enterprises in Spain

    Keith Salmon•ARTICLE•International Journal of Iberian…•2001

Spain was at the forefront of a worldwide wave of privatisation in the 1990s. The process was driven by a mixture of pragmatism, belief in its economic benefits and a desire to be at the heart of Europe. It was lubricated by buoyant stock markets. In the process of transferring state assets to the private sector, successive Spanish governments were careful to protect Spanish interests and to create a handful of major companies in which Spanish in…

  • The Spanish economy

    Keith Salmon•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Politics•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Between the establishment of the Single Market in 1993 and the end of the first year of EMU membership in 1999, the Spanish economy emerged from one of the deepest recessions in the European Union to become one of the fastest growing economies. Technological change, further liberalization and globalization drove economic restructuring. Deeper European integration and further regional devolution blurred the role of the state in managing the econom…
