Creative tourism and visitor motivation
Creative tourism has been explained as a new genre of tourism that offers the visitor an opportunity to develop their creative potential through an engaged experience in the destination visited. Despite a growing literature on the topic, little attention has been given to examining what motivates creative tourists to visit particular places and events. This paper aims to address this research gap by applying the push‐pull framework to investigate…
There is no room in our city for hate’: The re-emerged debates over the current and former place name of a Canadian city
In 1916, Berlin, Ontario, disappeared off the map through a controversial vote. In its place came a new toponym named after British Secretary of State for War, Horatio Herbert Kitchener. Over a century later, a Facebook post about the city’s name gained local media attention. For the writer of the post, the name Kitchener was synonymous for hate due to the military figure’s role in expanding the use of internment camps during the Second Boer War.…
Creative tourism and creative spaces in China
This study investigates creative tourism and creative spaces in China through travel blog analysis. In particular, we explore creative tourism-related experiences within China’s 14 UNESCO-designated creative cities. To do so, 456 identified creative spaces were individually searched in four popular Chinese travel experience sharing platforms. In total, 552 travel blogs were collected for analysis using Nvivo qualitative software. Our findings not…
Embedding Artists within Planning: Calgary’s Watershed+ Initiative
Since 2011, artists have been embedded within Calgary’s Utilities and Environmental Protection department as part of the public art program Watershed+. In particular, artists are given workspaces alongside municipal staff to encourage interaction and new ideas. Watershed+ has led to innovative examples of public art that are meant to provoke thought about the local environment. Through interviews with artists and municipal staff engaged in the pr…
War remembrance in a sacralized space of memory: The origins and evolution of Volkstrauertag in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada
In 1970, the remains of 187 German prisoners-of-war who died in Canada during World Wars I and II were transferred from three dozen sites across the country to a central burial ground in Kitchener, Ontario. Since then, a remembrance event ( Volkstrauertag) has been organized each November by members of the local German-Canadian community at the German War Graves in Kitchener’s Woodland Cemetery. I address the initial controversy that surrounded t…

Assessing the success of Heritage Conservation Districts: Insights from Ontario, Canada
Heritage Conservation Districts Work: Evidence from the Province of Ontario, Canada
Regulating change in historic districts to maintain their character is a conservation tool used around the world. In spite of success elsewhere, heritage conservation districts are still resisted by many in North America. To address the concerns of those opposed, the oldest 32 of 93 districts in Ontario were studied. Resident surveys, land-use mapping, townscape evaluation, land value records, municipal documents, and interviews were used. Findin…
Cultural planning in Ontario, Canada: Arts policy or more
Cultural planning is often explained as a strategic approach to urban cultural development; an approach that involves the ‘mapping’ and leveraging of a wide range of ‘cultural resources’ (arts, culture, and heritage). However, it is increasingly being questioned whether cultural planning is anything more than a fairly traditional arts policy with a different name. In particular, it has been observed in Australia that cultural plans usually fail t…
Cultural plan implementation and outcomes in Ontario, Canada
Since 2005 there has been a surge of cultural planning initiatives in Canada, especially in the Province of Ontario. However, very little research has been conducted in the more established cultural planning contexts of Australia, Great Britain and the United States let alone in Canada to support the assertions that underlie much of the movement's continued success. In particular, there has been an absence of research on the actual outcomes of th…
Sanctifying Ethnic Memory and Reinforcing Place Attachment: Cultural Identity, Sacred Place, and Pilgrimage in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan
On November 8,1908, the Our Lady of Assumption Church was opened in the Hungarian Catholic community of Kaposvar, Saskatchewan (located 4 km south of the present-day town of Esterhazy). Nearly a century later, the focal point of the early farming district remains an important commemorative site in eastern Saskatchewan for descendants of the pioneers who settled in the Kaposvar district under Count Paul d'Esterhazy's 1886 Hungarian colonization in…
