  • Horizontal Clusters and Firm Resilience

    Open Access•Riccardo Marzano•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2025

The paper examines the role that cluster‐specific horizontal relationships play in firm resilience following a negative shock. We use the Emilia earthquake that hit part of Emilia‐Romagna (Italy) in May 2012 to provide evidence of the negative effect of horizontal clustering on firm performance after a natural disaster. Moreover, empirical analyses show that firms within industrial districts are able to recover as soon as firms not belonging to i…

  • The role of founder CEO and independent board in family firms' international growth

    Open Access•Anita Kerai, Riccardo Marzano et al.•ARTICLE•Cross Cultural & Strategic…•2023•References: 10

Purpose This paper investigates the role of the founder CEO and board independence in shaping the way in which Indian and Italian family firms (FFs) pursue international growth via two modes, that is exports and FDI. This article claims that country's context matters in determining the relationship between the presence of the founder CEO and FFs' extent of exports and extent of FDI. Further, this article examines the moderating role of board inde…

  • Organized crime and waste management costs

Francesca Di Pillo, Nathan Levialdi et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The paper investigates the link between organized crime and municipal solid waste management costs. Using a panel dataset of 7069 Italian municipalities in the 2015–19 period, we find that organized crime operating in the environmental sector is associated with an increase in waste management costs. The effect of organized crime is stronger in macro-regions where organized crime is historically rooted. These results are established after controll…

  • Why Do Local Governments Resist Contracting Out

    Open Access•Paola Garrone, Riccardo Marzano•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 61

Local governments are reluctant to contract out public services. This article shows that resistance to contracting out is not at odds with efficiency. The sample includes all 135 municipalities that were distributing gas in an Italian region when a national reform ended direct delivery. Contracting out decisions have been analyzed for the subsequent 12 years through a duration model that admits time dependence and interaction with intermunicipal …
