  • Austerity and sustainability: ‘Common-sense' neoliberalism in a Finnish city

    Open Access•Antti Wallin•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 7

The 2008 financial crisis and the subsequent austerity measures were harsh on cities. Despite receiving little academic attention, in progressive Nordic countries, such as Finland, cities faced fiscal stress and implemented austerity. As a solution to cities’ budget deficits, austerity became a widely accepted ‘common-sense' policy. During this time, the seemingly contradictory sustainability policies increased support. Open Access•Helena Leino, Antti Wallin et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2025•Cited by: 5•References: 45

Based on a qualitative case study, this paper analyses how residents have used urban nature to counter territorial stigmatization. It views the relationship between territorial stigmatization and neighbourhood identity through urban nature, which has received minimal a…

  • Building a DIY skatepark and doing politics hands-on

    Open Access•Mikko Kyrönviita, Antti Wallin•ARTICLE•City•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 9

In recent years, informal and unauthorised amateur urban design solutions have become an urban trend in the global North. These Do-It-Yourself (DIY) urbanism actions can be playful commentaries, critical interventions or functional improvements to urban spaces. In general, DIY urbanism tries to make urban everyday life better, but it is not always considered a political act. This paper presents an ethnographic case study of a DIY skatepark buildi…
