  • Democracy Without Parties? Italy After Berlusconi

    Open Access•Chris J Bickerton, Chris Bickerton et al.•ARTICLE•The Political Quarterly•2014•Cited by: 7

This article looks at the legacy of ‘Berlusconism’ for Italian politics. On the right, we identify a process of fragmentation. As a result of the personalised leadership of Silvio Berlusconi, where loyalties and ties were to il cavaliere as an individual rather than to a party or a political tradition, there is little by way of legacy on the right. Surprisingly, we find that Berlusconi's greatest legacy lies on the left of Italian politics, in th…

  • European Integration

    Chris J Bickerton, Chris Bickerton•BOOK•European Integration•2012

"European integration confuses citizens and scholars alike. It appears to transfer power away from national capitals towards Brussels yet a close study of the EU reveals the absence of any real leap towards supranationalism. The EU is dominated by cooperation between national representatives and national officials yet it continually appears to us as something external and separate from national political life. This book takes on these paradoxes b…

  • Europe's Neo-Madisonians

    Open Access•Chris J Bickerton, Chris Bickerton•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 40

Debates about the legitimacy of political orders have long turned on the question of how political power should be limited. In the debate about the legitimacy of the European Union (EU), a ‘neo-Madisonian’ vision has emerged that identifies in the multi-level nature of the EU a contemporary version of Madison's argument about the separation of powers and checks and balances. The article situates this account of the EU's legitimacy within the wide…

  • Towards a Social Theory of EU Foreign and Security Policy

    Open Access•Chris J Bickerton, Chris Bickerton•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2011•Cited by: 16•References: 24

This article argues that the study of EU foreign and security policy has been hampered by its conceptualization of the sovereign state. Realist and constructivist scholars share Stanley Hoffmann's formulation of states as either ‘obstinate or obsolete’. EU foreign and security policy is puzzling in this respect as it corresponds to neither. Drawing on two examples – the EC's role in the Conference on Security and Co‐operation in Europe (CSCE) in …

  • Security Co‐operation beyond the Nation‐State

Open Access•Chris J Bickerton, Chris Bickerton et al.•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2011•Cited by: 15•References: 34

The article presents a critical overview of research on the European Union's Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP). Topics discussed include the evolving nature of the CSDP and the shift in its focus from European to global concerns, achievements of the CSDP, the debate on the performance and effectiveness of the CSDP, and theoretical frameworks within which to view the CSDP, among them international relations (IR) theories and an institution…
