    Open Access•David Patton•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2024•References: 5

  • Overcoming the pains of recovery: The management of negative recovery capital during addiction recovery pathways

Open Access•David Patton, David Best et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2022

Recovery is experienced in both positive and negative ways and this paper attempts to integrate the ‘pains of desistance’ approach into a recovery capital framework. Pains experienced as a result of negative recovery capital are often thought to stimulate motivations for positive behavioral change, usually through a ‘rock bottom’ type moment. Whilst recovery capital and barriers to recovery have been explored in the literature, conceptualizing th…

  • Maps and Biased Familiarity: Cognitive Distance Error and Reference Points

Robert Lloyd, Robert Earl Lloyd et al.•ARTICLE•Cartographica The International…•2011

When map readers process information on cartographic maps, there is a competition for visual attention controlled by both top-down and bottom-up mechanisms. We hypothesize that when learning, map readers are predisposed to allocate attention asymmetrically and to initially favour some locations over others. This asymmetrical allocation of attention facilitates learning for certain locations as a result of familiarity bias. In this study, particip…

  • An Exploration of the External Validity of Self-Report amongst Arrestees

    Open Access•David Patton•ARTICLE•Surveillance & Society•2002•References: 1

Self-report validation surveys in the USA focussing on arrestees' self-reports unequivocally demonstrate that they do not validly report their recent drug consumption despite being a highly drug involved group. Like their American counterparts, English arrestees display very high levels of drug consumption. Data used from the NEW-ADAM programme (1998) is used to explore the external validity of arrestees' self-reports to drug consumption in the 3…

  • The rise of Germany's Party of Democratic Socialism: Regionalised pluralism’ in the federal republic

    David F Patton, David Patton•ARTICLE•West European Politics•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This article considers if an emerging ‘polarised pluralism’ in the German party system explains the recent electoral fortunes of the Party of Democratic Socialism. While it finds that this approach usefully focuses attention on the dynamics of party competition in unified Germany, it nonetheless concludes that the conditions for polarised pluralism are not satisfied in Germany. In place of a ‘polarised pluralism’, this article suggests that a ‘re…

  • Social coalitions, political strategies, and German unification, 1990–1993

    David F Patton, David Patton•ARTICLE•West European Politics•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 3

To explain recent dramatic fluctuations in Chancellor Kohl's reputation as a political leader, a social coalition approach is advanced as an alternative to psychological and structural perspectives. After noting that different social coalitions might have arisen in 1990 in support of alternative conceptions of unification, this article explores the role of policy‐making in the genesis of a national bloc. It then argues that this process of coalit…

For the nine hypothesized factors, 95%, 98%, and 97% of the items loaded appropriately in each of the three samples. Across samples 84% of the items loaded appropriately. Furthermore the pattern of lo…
