  • De BMGN en het Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (1813-1840)

    Open Access•Els Witte•ARTICLE•BMGN - Low Countries Historical…•2021

    Open Access•Els Witte•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

    Open Access•Els Witte, AdK Translation•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

  • Looking back on fifteen years of FCC policy (1989‐2004)

    Open Access•Els Witte, AdK Translation•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2016

This contribution is a first impetus to explain the policy of the Flemish Community Commission during the period 1989‐2004. To this end the discourse of the main actors is analysed, i.e. the ministers who together form the Board and the members of parliament who have a seat in the Council. The Policy statements and the minutes of the meeting are the basis of this analysis. This literature provides interesting information about how the main actors…

The Belgian Nobility and the Orangism (1815-1830). When William i of Orange-Nassau became King of the Netherlands (1814-1815) he was fully aware of the influence of the rich, landowning aristocracy in the southern part of the Netherlands. He tried hard to have this group on his side. A minority was heavily opposed to the King’s politics in favour of a more secular society. After a while the majority appreciated that William i privileged them at h…

"Jezuïeten, bisschoppen en flaminganten. Documenten uit kerkelijke archieven over de controverse rond het taalregime in het katholiek middelbaar onderwijs, 1900-1906" published on 01 Jan 2010 by Brill

  • The battle for monasteries, cemeteries and schools

    Open Access•Els Witte•CHAPTER•Culture Wars•2003

The political and cultural history of Belgium has been characterised by three overlapping zones of tension: the relationship between capital and labour, the religious-philosophical divide and the language dispute between Flanders and francophone Belgium. Of these, the ‘religious-philosophical’ divide, which pitted Catholics against liberal secular free-thinkers, is considered the oldest. It was a feature above all of the nineteenth century, altho…

  • Culture Wars

    Open Access•James F Mcmillan, Els Witte et al.•BOOK•Culture Wars•2003

Across nineteenth-century Europe, the emergence of constitutional and democratic nation-states was accompanied by intense conflict between Catholics and anticlerical forces. At its peak, this conflict touched virtually every sphere of social life: schools, universities, the press, marriage and gender relations, burial rites, associational culture, the control of public space, folk memory and the symbols of nationhood. In short, these conflicts we…

  • Belgian federalism

    Els Witte•ARTICLE•West European Politics•1992•Cited by: 9•References: 1

From the beginning of the twentieth century, tendencies towards decentralisation began to take shape in the Belgian unitary state. They resulted in a federal concept in 1988. The constitutional reformers of 1988 worked out a strikingly original concept. Not only do the constituent parts differ thoroughly at the economic, social, ideological and linguistic‐cultural levels, but there is also an incredible degree of complexity and asymmetry among th…
