  • There Is No Quick Fix

    Open Access•Malouke Esra Kuiper•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Ethics•2026

Major scandals show the damage that organizational misconduct can do to society. Compliance officers play a crucial role in mitigating organizational misconduct. There is extensive empirical research on how such misconduct can effectively be prevented. However, little is known about compliance officers’ experiential knowledge and how this aligns with these scientific findings. Based on semi-structured interviews with compliance officers, this pap…

  • Enthusiast or sceptic? Social science consciousness among legal practitioners

Open Access•Malouke Esra Kuiper, Benjamin Van Rooij et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Law in…•2025•References: 19

There have been strong proponents and opponents in academic debates about the use of social science in legal practice. However, in such academic discussions, little attention has been paid to what legal practitioners think about social science and its use in law. The present study shows that legal practitioners have complex views about social science. Drawing on in-depth interviews, it shows that there are five ideal-types of ‘social science cons…

  • How Legal Punishment Affects Crime

Open Access•Benjamin Van Rooij, Malouke Esra Kuiper et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Law and Social…•2025•References: 11

This article explains what these 13 potential effects of punishment are and how they have been theorized. It further reviews the body of available empirical evidence for each of these mechanisms. It finds tha…

  • A Network Approach to Compliance

Open Access•Malouke Esra Kuiper, Monique Chambon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Ethics•2023

To understand how compliance develops both in everyday and corporate environments, it is crucial to understand how different mechanisms work together to shape individuals’ (non)compliant behavior. Existing compliance studies typically focus on a subset of theories (i.e., rational choice theories, social theories, legitimacy theories, capacity theories, and opportunity theories) to understand how key variables from one or several of these theories…

  • Cross-Theoretical Compliance

    Open Access•Anne Leonore de Bruijn, Yuval Feldman et al.•ARTICLE•Administration & Society•2023•References: 80

To understand the question why people obey or break rules, different approaches have focused on different theories and subsets of variables. The present research develops a cross-theoretical approach that integrates these perspectives. We apply this in a survey of compliance with COVID-19 pandemic mitigation rules in Israel. The data reveal that compliance in this setting was shaped by a combination of variables originating from legitimacy, capac…
