Tracing pottery production centres and sources over millennia in north-western Oman
Holocene Sea‐Level Changes and the Archaeological Record of Al‐Subiyah, Kuwait Bay
This paper examines the correlation between coastal archaeological sites and Holocene sea‐level changes in Kuwait Bay, focusing on specific historical periods. Recent investigations in Al‐Subiyah revealed diverse sites, including late Neolithic Ubaid settlements, a Bronze Age tumulus cemetery, scattered pottery from the late pre‐Islamic period and later stone‐lined wells possibly from the Islamic period. Radiocarbon dating of marine mollusk shell…
Umm an‐Nar soft‐stone vessel assemblage from Tomb QA 1‐1 (Oman) based on finds recovered from half the tomb
This article is devoted to the soft‐stone vessels retrieved from QA 1‐1, a tomb from the Umm an‐Nar period in Wadi al‐Fajj, Northwest Oman, as part of a joint Polish–Omani project in 2016–2018. To date, the excavations, although confined to half of the tomb’s interior, have yielded as many as 67 soft‐stone vessels or their fragments, which, at least for the time being, is the second‐largest collection of these items obtained from one Umm an‐Nar t…
Archaeological investigations of the Early Bronze Age burial site QA1 at Wadi al-Fajj in northern Oman
The first excavation season of a joint project of the PCMA and Department of Archaeology and Excavations, Ministry of Heritage and Culture, Oman, was carried out in the microregion of Qumayrah in the fall of 2016. A single tomb was investigated at an Umm an-Nar period burial site in the area of the village of Al-Ayn. A complete ground-plan was traced, identifying the tomb as an example of a well-known type with interior divided into four burial c…
Tumulus burial field on the north coast of Kuwait Bay. Preliminary excavation report on the spring season in 2012
Field research was concentrated on excavating burial mounds and non-sepulchral structures located in two different microregions: Muhaita (a new cluster of five structures representing different categories) and Bahra/Nahdain (three tumuli of which two represented a type with outer ring wall that had not been excavated so far). The excavation also provided the first secure dating evidence for the burial field in the form of a radiocarbon date for m…
