More Safaitic prayers, curses, and grief from Wādī Salḥūb (northeastern Jordan)
This paper presents an analysis of a group of Ancient North Arabian Safaitic inscriptions that resulted from field work carried out by Yarmouk University in Wādī Qaṭṭāfī/Wādī Salḥūb in northeastern Jordan. Translations are provided on the basis of the published and accessible Safaitic materials and studies thereon. Lexemes whose interpretation is not unanimously agreed upon by researchers in the field are discussed
A Greek graffito from Wādī Rāǧil (northeast Jordan)
A new Greek graffito from the basaltic desert of northeastern Jordan is published here. It commemorates the passage or stay of its author in the Wādī Rāǧil. Numerous Safaitic inscriptions already testified to the presence of nomadic pastoralists in this natural corridor between the Ḥawrān, the Azraq oasis, and the Wādī al-Sirḥān, on the margins of the Roman province of Arabia. The onomastics of the text find parallels in regional, Safaitic and Na…
Latin inscriptions from Bāyir (Jordan)
For centuries, the remote site of Bāyir, far to the east in southeast Jordan, in an arid environment, was frequented by nomads watering their herds, thanks to its huge wells. Four Latin graffiti from Bāyir area are published or revised and republished here. They provide new evidence of the visits paid to the place by troops from the Roman army
A Safaitic–Greek Graffito by a Shepherd in the Black Desert of Jordan
A newly discovered bilingual rock‐cut graffito from Qāʿ Raʿd is presented here. This Safaitic–Greek inscription recalls the stay of a shepherd and his flock in the basaltic desert of northeast Jordan. Although numerous documents have largely confirmed the presence of nomadic pastoralists in the same area, proven bilingual examples are exceptionally rare. This discovery once again raises questions about the role of the Greek language among the pop…
An Ancient North Arabian inscribed Nefesh Stele from the vicinity of Jerash (Nortwestern Jordan)
The present study tackles an nfs1 North Arabian inscription discovered in a close vicinity of Jerash (Northwestern Jordan) by a French archaeological expedition in the eighties of the last century. The lam auctoris, the personal name and the word nfs1 are treated philologically in the context of the Semitic onomasticon and lexica. The geographical setting of the inscription is discussed as well
