  • The effectiveness of the New Inspection Regime for Port State Control

Open Access•Yi Xiao, Grace Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2020

  • The Politics of Financing the Highway Boom in China

    Kun-Chin Lin, Kun‐chin Lin•ARTICLE•Asian Survey•2018

Fiscal federalism has provided the institutional basis for the rapid highway boom in China for three decades, creating a close linkage between subnational investment and revenue claims on tolled roads. This model of capitalization is financially unsustainable and undermines the standardization of taxation and contracting of public–private partnership projects

  • The Local Government in Corporate Restructuring

Open Access•Kun‐chin Lin, Shaofeng Chen•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Chinese Affairs•2013•References: 18

Through two illustrative case studies of enterprise reform in Henan Province, we examine the underlying political contentions behind the changing roles of local government in the process of the corporatization and asset restructuring of state-owned enterprises (SOE) starting in the late 1990s. As SOEs lose their ability to meet the multitude of resource demands from central and local officials, they become sites of inter-governmental contentions …

  • Contemplating Chinese Foreign Policy

    Open Access•Jean‐marc F Blanchard, Kun‐chin Lin•ARTICLE•Pacific Focus•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 14

Many have contemplated C hinese foreign policy and its future direction, but few have queried how Chinese history might illuminate both. This is unfortunate since researchers have shown that history can influence foreign policy agendas, discourses, and national goals. Moreover, it provides an invaluable tool for comparative analysis. The purpose of this introduction is to provide historical background to the articles comprising this special issue…

  • Politics and the Market in Twenty-First-Century China

    Open Access•Kun‐chin Lin•ARTICLE•Political Studies Review•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 5

The four volumes reviewed in this article examine the common theme of the sustainability of China's authoritarian regime as it faces tremendous centripetal forces of market expansion, increased administrative complexity, and social differentiation brought about by the post-Mao Zedong reforms. I argue that the shared focus of several authors on the Chinese Communist party's exercise of individual-level controls – either through internal disciplina…

  • With Strings Attached? Improving the Administration of Central State Financed Investment Projects in the PRC

    Lin Kun-Chin, Kun‐chin Lin•ARTICLE•Asian Journal of Political Science•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 55

This article takes a new look at the institutional core of China's economic planning—the State Development and Planning Commission (SDPC, 1998–2003)—focusing on its role in approving and fundraising for major capital investment projects. The primary objective of this inquiry is to identify changes in the network structure and procedures of inter-agency relations and central planners’ interactions with national legislators, which have produced a d…
