Patterns of Multisystem Involvement in Adolescence
Dual‐system young people who crossover between child protection and youth justice systems experience a range of health and educational issues. However, very little research has examined the health and education needs of these young people, especially in Indigenous populations. A retrospective cohort study was established using individual‐level linked records to examine the child protection, youth justice, health, and education (multisystem) invol…
Prevalence and Factors Associated With Alleged Offending Among Children Aged 10–13 Years in the Northern Territory of Australia
Recent policy discourse in Australia focuses on the minimum age of criminal responsibility with minimal attention to prevention strategies. Guided by theory which views child development within nested environmental contexts and recognises the cumulative impact of risk factors, this retrospective cohort study uses de‐identified linked administrative data to investigate the prevalence of, and factors associated with, alleged offending among childre…
Opportunities in Middle Childhood
Middle childhood offers a crucial window to identify and support children at risk of adverse outcomes in adolescence. This retrospective cohort study examined how data from multiple systems could identify children with the greatest need for support during middle childhood and early adolescence. Using individual level linked records from health, education, child protection and justice system for children who were enrolled in Northern Territory gov…
Transitional pathways through middle school for First Nations students in the Northern Territory of Australia
The middle-school years (Year 7 to Year 9) is a particular challenge for socially disadvantaged populations, with high proportions of children either repeating school years or dropping out of school. In Australia, a group of particular concern is First Nations children for whom there is a collective effort by all governments to improve education outcomes, although there have been few studies of their transition through the middle-school years. Th…
Association Between Preconception Maternal Mental Health-Related Hospitalisation (MHrH) and Outcomes During Pregnancy
Comprehensive studies investigating the link between maternal hospitalisation for mental health conditions prior to pregnancy and adverse outcomes in pregnancy are scarce in Australia. We aimed to fill this gap by using 18 years of administratively linked data to inform early interventions. We linked the perinatal data from the year 1999 to 2017 to the hospital hospitalisation data to create a cohort of pregnant women aged 15 to 44 years who gave…
Prevalence of exposure to domestic and family violence among Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children in the Northern Territory of Australia
Although there is substantial evidence regarding the detrimental effect exposure to domestic and family violence (DFV) has on healthy child development, there is a paucity of information on the prevalence of childhood DFV exposure. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of DFV exposure among Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia. This was a retrospective observational cohort study using linked ind…
Patterns of alleged offending amongst Aboriginal and non‐Aboriginal young people in the Northern Territory of Australia, 1997–2019
In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are much more likely to be arrested, charged with criminal offences and imprisoned than other Australians. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders comprise 49% of young people in detention but only 5.8% of the Australian population aged 10–17. This study investigated changes between 1997 and 2019 in the interaction of Aboriginal and non‐Aboriginal young people with the justice system in t…
Mental health-related hospitalisations associated with patterns of child protection and youth justice involvement during adolescence
Opportunities for prevention
The increased risk of offending associated with level and timing of early CPS contact highlights opportunities for a differentiated public health response to improve life trajectories for children and to reduce youth crime. Although children with unsubstantiated notifications of maltreatment do not meet the criteria for a statutory CPS response, the higher risk of offending among these children supports their inclusion in targeted preventive inte…
The link between hearing impairment and child maltreatment among Aboriginal children in the Northern Territory of Australia
Our findings demonstrate the urgent need for HI and child maltreatment prevention strategies through raised community awareness and inter-agency collaboration. Effective information-sharing between service providers is a critical first step to a public health approach in child protection
The impact of hearing impairment on early academic achievement in Aboriginal children living in remote Australia
OM-related HI was independently associated with poorer early year academic achievement in Aboriginal children living in remote NT communities. Interventions to improve academic outcomes for Aboriginal children must incorporate actions to address the negative impact associated with HI through early detection, effective treatment and ongoing support for affected children
Hearing and justice
Lifetime and twelve-month prevalence of heavy-drinking in Singapore
Singapore has a relatively high prevalence of 12-month heavy drinking of 12.6%, and lifetime heavy drinking of 15.9%. Heavy drinking was positively associated with both physical and mental health conditions, and with declines in quality of life. Continued monitoring of heavy drinking behavior and sustained efforts to mitigate the risks associated with heavy drinking is needed
