  • Resilience of consumer city under heatwaves

Open Access•Donghyeon Yu, Hyoji Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2026

This study examines how heatwaves reshape urban consumption across online and offline channels. Using detailed credit card transaction data from Seoul (2022–2025), we analyse category-level spending within urban clusters. We find that heatwaves do not uniformly reduce total sales; instead, they induce heterogeneous channel reallocation. In some sectors, online transactions expand under thermal stress, partially offsetting offline declines, while …

  • Seoul street-view database for urban environment research

Open Access•H S Kim, Hokyun Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Urban Science•2026

Street-view imagery provides valuable insights into the physical and social dimensions of urban environments. Seoul, South Korea, known for its rapid urban transformation, presents a distinctive blend of traditional urban centers and newly developed districts. To gain a comprehensive understanding of Seoul’s urban development, we constructed a street-view database spanning 14 years (2010–2023), comprising 423,353 images. To enhance data quality, …

  • Close to home

    Open Access•Hyoji Choi, Frank M H Neffke et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2026•References: 6

This study examines how bundled consumption, defined as repeated co-use of amenities within clusters, shapes urban resilience based on empirical evidence from Seoul between 2019 and 2023. Using credit card transactions and shop locations, we extend economic complexity methods to the demand side by constructing a relatedness-based measure of co-consumption. Results show that bundled use is concentrated near residences, especially within 0–2 km but…

  • Population concentration in high-complexity regions within city during the heat wave

Open Access•Hyoji Choi, Jonghyun Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 2

This study investigates the impact of the 2018 summer heat wave on urban mobility in Seoul and the role of economic complexity in the region’s resilience. Analysis of subway and mobile phone data reveals a significant decrease in the floating population during the extreme heat wave, underscoring the thermal vulnerability of urban areas. However, urban regions with higher complexity demonstrate resilience, attracting more visitors despite high tem…

  • Ports as catalysts

    Jung-In Yeon, So Jung Hwang et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Recognising the intricate link between ports and regional economies, this study investigates the spillover effects of neighbouring ports on regional industrial diversification and economic resilience. Analysing South Korea’s 2006–20 export data from port and neighbouring port regions, it uncovers the unique feature of ports as a distinctive knowledge source within their port regions, mainly attributable to the respective logistic and trade system…

  • Inside out

    Open Access•Young-Long Kim, Bogang Jun•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2022•References: 2

The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed human mobility patterns in cities. Lockdowns, social distancing and flexible working hours have restructured pre-existing dynamics between two opposing forces in major cities: centripetal and centrifugal. To scrutinise the new dynamics, human mobility in the Seoul Metropolitan Area in early 2020 was investigated using big data collected from cell phone activity. By suggesting a network-based approac…

  • The economic resilience of a city

    Open Access•Bogang Jun, Cristian Jara-Figueroa et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2022•References: 20

Amenity clusters consisting of coffee shops, restaurants and other small businesses improve urban life and are a source of employment for city dwellers. Although most small business clusters were hit hard by restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some were able to adapt. What determines the economic resilience of amenity clusters? Using store-location data for Seoul from 2016 to 2021, we identify spatial clusters of amenities, and fro…

  • Spillovers across industries and regions in China’s regional economic diversification

Jian Gao, Bogang Jun et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2021•Cited by: 8•References: 4

Industrial diversification depends on spillovers from related industries and nearby regions, yet their interaction remains largely unclear. We study economic diversification in China during the period 1990–2015 and present supportive evidence on both spillover channels. We add to the literature by showing that these two channels behave as substitutes when explaining new entries and exits, and by using acceleration campaigns of high-speed rail to …
