  • Humor styles and well-being of women with endometriosis during the Covid-19 pandemic

    Heidi L Fritz, A Abigail Payne et al.•ARTICLE•Humor - International Journal of…•2025•References: 4

Women with endometriosis frequently report worse psychological distress, pain, and quality of life than healthy women. However, not all women with endometriosis fare poorly, suggesting that coping resources may moderate the relation of endometriosis with adjustment. Thus, we examined the relation of adaptive and maladaptive humor styles with mental and physical health outcomes among women with endometriosis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Forty-eig…

  • Tax-Reported Charitable Giving in Canada, 1987–2018

Ross Hickey, A Abigail Payne et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2025

We explore trends in charitable giving in Canada since the late 1980s. We find that the real average donation rose through the 1990s and has been flat since the mid-2000s. The stabilization of donations occurs alongside a fall in the share of income donated and a steady decline in the share of filers who donate any amount. When focusing on top incomes, giving among the top 1.0 percent and top 0.1 percent grew over the entire time period. Over the…

  • Understanding the STEM Path through High School and into University Programs

    Martin Dooley, A Abigail Payne et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 2

We use two administrative data sets to examine the correlates of (a) taking the high school courses needed for university science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs and (b) applying to and registering in such programs. Staying on the STEM path during high school depends most importantly on math and science grades at each level. Factors such as gender, immigration status, and average neighbourhood income play relatively smal…

  • Persistence and Academic Success in University

  • Diversity and Donations: The Effect of Religious and Ethnic Diversity on Charitable Giving

James Andreoni, A Abigail Payne et al.•REPORT•National Bureau of Economic…•2011

We explore the effects of local ethnic and religious diversity on individual donations to private charities. Using 10-year neighborhood-level panels derived from personal tax records in Canada, we find that diversity has a detrimental effect on charitable donations. A 10 percentage point increase in ethnic diversity reduces donations by 14%, and a 10 percentage point increase in religious diversity reduces donations by 10%. The ethnic diversity e…

  • Government Oversight of Public Universities: Are Centralized Performance Schemes Related to Increased Quantity or Quality

A Abigail Payne, Joanne Roberts•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2010

Universities are engaged in many activities, primarily research and teaching. Many states have instituted performance measures that focus on evaluating a university's success in teaching. We suggest that multitasking may be important in this context, and we consider research outcomes after adoption. We find striking results that depend on university status. Research activity is higher at flagship institutions after the adoption of performance mea…

  • Do Government Grants to Private Charities Crowd Out Giving or Fund-raising

    James Andreoni, A Abigail Payne•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2003

Economists have long observed that crowding out of government grants to private charities is incomplete. The accepted belief is that givers treat the grants as imperfect substitutes for private giving. We theoretically and empirically investigate a second reason: the strategic response of a charity will be to reduce fund-raising efforts after receiving a grant. Employing panel data from arts and social service organizations, we find that governme…

  • The impact of state governance structures on management and performance of public organizations: A study of higher education institutions

    Open Access•Jack H Knott, A Abigail Payne•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2003•Cited by: 23•References: 5

Legislative statutes are passed by political majorities which support structures that insulate the implementing agency from its political opponents over time. Political actors also respond to different constituencies. Depending on the broad or narrow base of these constituencies, actors favor different kinds of governance structures. We apply this theoretical framework to the question of whether the state governance structures of boards of higher…
