Transnational Parents in Italy
This article studies the association between transnational parenthood, that is, mothers and fathers who have migrated, leaving at least one child in the country of origin, and well‐being among first‐generation immigrants in Italy. Transnational households have been researched mostly through qualitative interviews and ethnographies. This paper uses nationally representative data for Italy from the Survey on Social Condition and Integration of Fore…

Uncanny Babushka
Geographical mobility may have a powerful influence on sexual change. The sexual dimension of migration has mostly been studied in reference to its role in shaping aspiration for mobility. It has been documented how the promise of an erotically desirable future plays often an important role in many migration subcultures. Mobility, moreover, has been recognized as one of the ways in which many types of sexual minorities have escaped repression or …
International Mobility, Erotic Plasticity and Eastern European Migrations
When individuals cross a border and settle in a new social environment, they become migrants. People come here to work, improve the family conditions, restore a lost status. They work, send remittances, strive to adjust their legal status, learn how to cope with a new way of living. But they also make new friends, new lovers, reunite families. They also encounter new sexual cultures, new erotic narratives and norms. Migration is consequently a go…
Migration and Sexual Change
The current world is globally differentiated in many segmented sexual subcultures. Unsurprisingly, the existence of sexual differences – real or imagined, feared or desired – is embedded in the functioning of ethno-cultural boundaries. As the papers published in this special issue show, migration challenges such boundaries in many ways – some obvious, some counter-intuitive - and through a variety of processes. In recent years, many studies of mi…
Il mito delle comunità chiuse
The social and religious life of the foreign population in Italy is surely an important topic. Unfortunately, it has condensed over the years a cloud of largely mythological interpretations. They converge on a strongly communitarian frame. Relying on the large-scale survey carried out by the National Institute of Statistics in 2011-2012, we suggest a different interpretation able to highlight the heterogeneity of social and religious styles
The Presentation of Self in Emigration
This article, based on five years of ethnographic fieldwork, describes the strategies for the presentation of the Self employed by Eastern European immigrant women in the Italian northeast. These middle-aged women migrated alone, are employed as live-in care workers, and often lack legal status. For them, migration is a deeply felt trauma, which they narrate as being forced upon them by the collapse of the USSR and the failures of the transition …
Migrant friendships, migrant loves – taking the sociability of second generations seriously
The children of immigrants, both foreign- and Italian-born, have become a sizeable presence in Italian high schools – one with which other students, teachers and administrators must interact on a regular basis. This paper presents findings – complemented by ethnographic observations – of the first two waves of a longitudinal survey among classi from high schools in Trento, Italy. It explores the sociability patterns and categorical identification…
Hyper-femininity as decency
This article explores the meanings of hyper-feminine performances enacted by a group of former USSR women migrating to Alpinetown (in northern Italy) and employed as live-in careworkers. Utilizing data from a three-year, multi-sited ethnography, I describe the ways in which they draw social boundaries and advance generalized claims for respect. I also document how such hyper-femininity is rooted in a performative understanding of womanhood as a n…
Theorizing Irregular Migration
This article claims that the study of irregular migration may be a strategic research material for the development of an adequate understanding of contemporary society. The field, however, suffers not only from a lack of reliable empirical data, but also from endemic undertheorizing. The article shows how the attempt to develop an understanding of irregular migration from within a general theory of modern society has positive consequences both fo…
A tale of networks and policies
In recent decades, large‐scale irregular migration flows and systems have developed across Europe. Although such systems involve most European countries and are often treated as being similar, their structures and dynamics are quite different. Some irregular migration systems have developed through clandestine entries, while other systems are almost entirely the result of overstaying. Some systems have been structured around a sequence of self‐co…
