  • Exploring novel determinants of exercise behavior

    Open Access•Harold Lee, Harold H Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Behavioral Medicine•2025•Referencias: 60

Many middle-aged to older adults do not engage in regular exercise at all, despite its importance for healthy aging. Extensive research grounded in behavioral and social science theories has identified numerous determinants of exercise. However, few studies used an exposure-wide approach, a data-driven exploratory method particularly useful for identifying novel determinants. Methods: We used data from 13 771 participants in the Health and Retire…

  • Lifestyle Behaviors and Health-Related Quality of Life in Cancer Survivors

    Open Access•Jenny L Olson, David E Conroy et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2024

Healthy lifestyle behaviors can improve health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in cancer survivors; but the combination of behaviors most important for HRQOL is not known. This study investigated the patterns of lifestyle behaviors among cancer survivors and differences in HRQOL between behavioral classes. Cancer survivors ( n = 2,463) were invited to participate in a cross-sectional survey. Participants ( N = 591) were predominately female (63%)…

  • Broad versus narrow bandwidth measures of experienced automaticity for physical activity

    Jenny L Olson, Scherezade K Mama et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2024

Objective: Physical activity is important for health, yet most young adults are insufficiently active. Physical activity is regulated in part, by habit, typically operationalised as automaticity. Little is known about the characteristics of automaticity, or whether broad bandwidth unidimensional measures of automaticity for physical activity are superior to narrower bandwidth multi- dimensional measures. Design: This secondary analysis (N = 238) …

  • Affective judgments, environmental determinants, and physical activity in emerging and young adults

    Taylor B Turrisi, Constantino Lagoa et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2024

OBJECTIVE: Affective judgements represent a promising target for promoting physical activity among adults. This study examined whether relations between affective judgments and physical activity are robust after adjusting for social, built, and natural environmental determinants. DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional study with 173 adults (70.1% female) aged 18-29 years who self-reported less than 90 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activit…

  • How the social ecology and social situation shape individuals’ affect valence and arousal

Nina Vogel, Nilam Ram et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2016

Many theories highlight the role social contexts play in shaping affective experience. However, little is known about how individuals' social environments influence core affect on short time-scales (e.g., hours). Using experience sampling data from the iSAHIB, wherein 150 adults aged 18 to 89 years reported on 64,213 social interactions (average 6.92 per day, SD = 2.85) across 9 weeks of daily life, we examined how 4 features of individuals' soci…

  • Daily Life Satisfaction in Older Adults as a Function of (In)Activity

    Jaclyn P Maher, David E Conroy•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2015•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

Results indicated that daily deviations in objectively measured sedentary behavior and self-reported physical activity have implications for older adults' well-being. Interventions designed to enhance well-being and quality of life in older adults should consider targeting daily changes in total sedentary behavior and daily changes in the volume or frequency of physical activity

  • Daily physical activity and life satisfaction across adulthood

    Open Access•Jaclyn P Maher, Aaron L Pincus et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2015•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 5

Physical activity is considered a valuable tool for enhancing life satisfaction. However, the processes linking these constructs likely differ across the adult life span. In older adults the association between physical activity and life satisfaction appears to involve usual levels of physical activity (i.e., a between-person association driven by differences between more and less active people). In younger adults the association has consistently…
