The politics of fantasy and tourism development in Romania
The paper employs the psychoanalytical concept of fantasy to examine how it infers tourism policy making, a question not raised so far in the field of tourism studies. Engaging this novel approach, the paper looks into the way political imaginaries and ontologies split apart from reality-grounded assessments and undertakings to make sense of how tourism politics moved into the realms of a national fantasy in Romania. Based on the qualitative anal…
Self-initiated residential mobility in pandemic times: A Schumpeterian perspective
This paper reads voluntary residential relocation during the COVID-19 pan-demic in Romania through the lens of creative destruction, counter-balancingits more common framing of disruption. Revisiting Schumpeter’s classicthesis, we adapt its economic concepts into a social vocabulary of new“lifeforms,” “mutations” and “wants,” enacted by agentic pandemic moversin pursuit of a better way of life. Drawing on 77 qualitative questionnaires, weexamine …
Urban imaginaries in the affective politics of becoming a new town in Romania
The post-2000 urbanisation wave of Eastern Europe, which saw about 470 communes granted township status, has received minimal attention in urban studies. This paper focuses on the key case of Romania where rural-to-urban reclassification, and its reversal, are grassroots-driven and contingent on local referenda. Given this democratic process, we examine the urban imaginaries that have shaped these referenda and their aftermath, and how they relat…
Encounters of technology and space in the context of reindustrialization (Romania)
Technological intensity is a moderating factor for the relationships between industrial structures and regional dynamics. • Technological trajectories emerge, evolve and overlap to shaping specific technology-industry patterns. • Technological profiles co-evolve with context conditions through dynamic and mutually-reinforcing mechanisms. • Causal relations and various patterns of behavior add identity to each technological profile
The refeudalisation of parks: Subduing urban parks in Bucharest
This paper explores parks in Bucharest under regulations prompting greening projects and how, through these, the past has reclaimed markers evoking refeudalisation. Shifting the metaphor from a Western context to Bucharest, our approach extends the Jürgen Habermas’ refeudalisation of the public sphere to urban parks as they progressively become elements in the local framework of power. Based on fieldwork coupled with archival research, this paper…
From command to market-driven economy: The changing role of manufacturing industries in Romania
In 1990, Romania and other CEE countries embarked on a political shift that prompted radical structural and spatial changes in economic activities. Industrial restructuring holds a central role in strengthening both EU convergence and internal socioeconomic divergence. The aim of this paper is to discuss the contribution of manufacturing to national wealth creation, the attractiveness of industries to foreign direct investments, and the evolution…
Peripheralitysquared: Mapping the fractal spatiality of peripheralization in the Danube region of Romania
Starting from the assumption that the core/periphery relations are fractal assemblages of scale of varying intensity, this paper explores and maps at a finely-grained scale the alignment between the socioeconomic and relational attributes of place in a context of peripheralitysquared whereby further peripheralization occurs within a ‘periphery’. To illustrate this context we focus on the Danube region of Romania. Building on two relatively dispar…
“And they lived (un)happily ever after”… State institutions, public enterprises in the energy sector and the value of environment in Romania
The paper addresses the interplay between economics and the politics of state-owned enterprises confronted with changes concerning the value of environment under post-1990 transformations. It examines the value of the environment as a result of state-public firm relations grounded on the multiple and often conflicting demands within the changing context and requirements of the EU environmental policy. By process-tracing two Romanian SOEs in the c…
After deindustrialisation: Changing urban economy in the Danube valley region
The paper is aiming to discuss the role of deindustrialization in generating socio-economic dislocation at regional level. The change of industry along the way from the centrallyplanned to market oriented economy, while redening the spatial patterns of growth and decline, has combined with emergent forms of social and economic inequality. The specic aims of the paper are twofold. First, having the privilege of a two and a half-decade long perspec…
From Veneto (Italy) to Timişoara (Romania): The Birth of an Industrial Cluster
At international level, industrial clusters have drawn the attention of researchers and policy-makers through their role in revitalizing local economies and generating regional growth. This article analyses the way in which the Italian footwear and textile companies have transferred the concept of Marshallian district from the "Third Italy" to Western Romania. Empirically, the study explains why and how the Italian shoe and textile-makers have re…
