Flood-induced traffic congestion and accessibility loss for urban road networks using agent-based simulation
This study proposes a methodology for assessing the impact of flood-induced functional disruptions on urban road networks through an agent-based traffic simulation. Network functionality is altered by reducing roads’ free-flow speeds using a risk-based approach, and traffic is appraised considering agent-based traffic dynamics. MATSim, an open-source transport simulator, is employed to model dynamic traffic redistribution and congestion under bot…
Public health spatial planning in practice. Understanding the local spatial planning for health system in England through a narrative synthesis of systems approaches
The planning system can help to address the complexity of determinants of our health which are driven by a combination of factors. A growing body of evidence and practice suggest taking systems perspectives can help tackle such complexity. Local planning authorities in England are required to create local planning frameworks that can improve health outcomes across these determinants. This paper discusses a spectrum of relevant systems concepts to…
Health consideration in UK urban development
This article maps and explores the system influencing the consideration of health in UK urban development decision-making based on interviews with 132 decision-makers in public, private and third sector roles. It implements a novel approach to construct and aggregate multiple causal loop diagrams to synthesise the perspectives of different stakeholder groups in a single model. It illustrates how seven interventions targeting different parts of th…
Operationalising a large research programme tackling complex urban and planetary health problems
Addressing increasingly urgent global challenges requires the rapid mobilisation of new research groups that are large in scale, co-produced and focussed explicitly on investigating root causes at a systemic level. This requires new ways of operationalising and funding research programmes to better support effective interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary (ID/TD) partnerships between a wide range of academic disciplines and stakeholder groups. Un…
