Energy consumption and trade liberalization: New micro-evidence from China
The relationship between smartphone addiction, academic procrastination, and anxiety: Evidence from a diary-based approach
To understand how academic procrastination, anxiety, and smartphone addiction are related, as well as the mechanisms underlying these relationships, this study constructed a mediation model to investigate the influence of college students' anxiety on their academic procrastination and the mediating effect of smartphone addiction. The study randomly selected 306 students from a university in Jiangxi Province and conducted a 10-day diary follow-up …
The dark side of transition periods: Environmental impacts of administrative mergers in China
Asean 's efficiency scores in achieving the sustainable development goals
With limited government resources, achieving all 17 SDGs by 2030 is challenging, and it would be best to prioritize the implementation of the SDGs. This study applies the SBM model of DEA to compare ASEAN with closely interacting countries. Using DEA can identify the characteristics of efficient decision‐making units (i.e., efficient countries), identify the relatively inefficient SDGs of ASEAN and the best practice peer countries, and determine …
A Dynamic DEA Analysis of Health Output Efficiencies of Cities and Counties in Taiwan
This research utilizes the dynamic slack-based measure (DSBM) model to evaluate health output efficiencies in Taiwan's administrative districts from 2014 to 2018. To measure health output efficiency, it adopts four input variables, one output variable, and one carry-over (exercise expenditure). This paper includes both public goods in totals and private goods per capita as the inputs of health output. Empirical results indicate that health output…
The warming winter accelerated methane emissions during subsequent rice growing season from paddy fields
Global temperature is projected to increase, which impacts the ecological process in northern mid- and high-latitude ecosystems, but the winter temperature change in ecosystems is among the least understood. Rice paddy represents a significant contributor to global anthropogenic CH 4 emissions and has a strong climate forcing feedback; however, the legacy effects of warming winter on CH 4 emissions in the subsequent growing season remain uncertai…
Degrees of Shortage and Uncovered Ratios for Long-Term Care in Taiwan’s Regions: Evidence from Dynamic DEA
The government is facing the country's aging population and low birth rate have led to a severe shortage of its healthcare workforce in Taiwan after 2003. In order to explore the status of the country's degree of long-term care shortage and uncovered ratio, this research uses the Push-Pull-Mooring (PPM) theory to explain long-term care efficiency during 2010-2019 in each city and county. We collect longitudinal-sectional data for 2010-2019 from t…
Projecting the Target Quantity of Medical Staff in Taiwan’s Administrative Regions by the Theory of Carrying Capacity
As physicians and nurses are the main medical staff in any healthcare system, an appropriate medical workforce distribution is crucial for an aging society. This study thus applies the theory of carrying capacity and the given demand side to explore the carrying capacity, carrying efficiency, and potential adjustment ratio of medical staff in Taiwan's administrative regions by using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach in which a lower ca…
Efficiency of Life Insurance Companies: An Empirical Study in Mainland China and Taiwan
The study employs metafrontier and four-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) to measure the overall and individual efficiency of life insurance companies in mainland China and Taiwan, after applying the slack-based measure (SBM)-DEA model to adjust the differences in the operating environment across production units. The empirical findings show the following: (a) The environmental factors significantly affected the efficiency of all life insuran…
Efficient waste and pollution abatements for regions in Japan
This paper computes efficient industrial waste and air pollutants abatements for 47 regions in Japan for the period 1992–2002. The variable-returns-to-scale (VRS) data envelopment analysis (DEA) with a single output (real GDP) and seven inputs (labor, real public capital stock, real private capital stock, industrial waste, sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide, and soot and dust) is used to compute target wastes of each region for each year. The efficient…
Cost Efficiency of International Tourist Hotels in Taiwan: A Data Envelopment Analysis Application
This paper uses the data envelopment analysis approach to measure cost, allocative and overall technical efficiencies of international tourist hotels (ITHs) in Taiwan during 1997–2006. There are three outputs, three inputs, three input prices and four environmental variables in the empirical model. The cost inefficiency of these hotels is from overall technical inefficiency. International tourist hotels in Taiwan have an average efficiency of 57%…
Efficient three industrial waste abatement for regions in China
This paper computes efficient three industrial waste abatements (solid, water and gas) for 30 regions in China from 1996–2003. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) with a single output (real GDP) and five inputs (labour, real capital stock, solid wastes, waste water and waste gas) is used to compute the target wastes of each region for each year. The efficient abatement ratios of each region in each year are then obtained by comparing the actual waste…
Effects of China's communication industry policy on domestic cellphone manufacturers
Total-factor energy efficiency of regions in China
Efficient air pollution abatement for regions in China
This paper computes the efficient air pollution abatement ratios of 30 regions in China during the period 1996–2002. Three air emissions (SO2, soot and dust) are considered. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) with a single output (real GDP) and five inputs (labour, real capital stock, SO2, dust and soot emissions) is used to compute the target emissions of each region for each year. The efficient abatement ratios of each region in each year are then…
Under the shadow of Asian Brown Clouds: Unbalanced regional productivities in China and environmental concerns
China has seen rapid economic growth over the past two decades, but severe environmental problems have accompanied this, such as the looming danger of Asian Brown Clouds. This paper analyzes the regional development of China by examining economic performance and environmental factors. Technical efficiency and productivity changes in 31 regions of China are computed for the period 1997–2001. In the case of regional GDP, the fast-developing eastern…
Taking CO 2 emissions into a country's productivity change: The Asian growth experience
A country's macroeconomic policies have two basic objectives: to provide its citizens with a means to make a better living and a preferable environment. For the past decades, accompanying its fantastic economic growth, fast-developing Asia has become one of the major contributors to the increase of global carbon dioxide emissions. This paper analyzes productivity growth of ten Asian countries, namely, China, Japan, the NIEs and the ASEAN-4, by ex…
Time Factors of Patent Litigation and Licensing
This study incorporates the concept of time into an analysis of patent litigation and licensing. We show that increasing imitation or litigation costs with a longer imitation lag or litigation time may have effects on licensing, settlement, and fees other than increasing the pecuniary costs. A higher pecuniary imitation cost always benefits the patentee and hurts the imitator. However, the patentee may prefer faster imitation to induce ex ante li…
