Nonprofit organizations as policy transfer agents
Business improvement districts (BIDs) were created about 50 years ago and are now recognized worldwide, including in Albania. Given Albania’s post-socialist history and lack of entrepreneurial experience in urban management, this study will focus on the introduction of the BID model, supporting the need in the literature for further research into the model’s transferability in developing countries. Are East Asian “shrinking cities” falling into a loop? Insights from the interplay between population decline and metropolitan concentration in Japan
Addressing the challenges of shrinking cities globally remains complex, with underlying causes still requiring in-depth exploration. In Japan, the phenomenon of shrinking cities is intricately linked to Tokyo's Unipolar Concentration. Despite governmental initiatives aimed at decentralizing metropolitan growth and revitalizing declining regions, these trend–mirroring patterns observed in other East Asian nations such as South Korea and China–cont…

An attempt to open up a new path of rural development? rural transformational development under the characteristic town strategy in China
The global decline in rural areas has made rural transformational development a subject of significant interest. The Characteristic Town (CT) strategy, a prominent aspect of China's recent urbanization efforts, focuses on innovative development methods to promote coordinated urban-rural growth and enhance capacity and quality. However, the mechanisms through which this strategy facilitates potential rural transformational development have not yet…
A Governance Theory for Cross-Border Regions
The rise of governance in border studies has become an opportunity to increase efficiency, generate better institutional arrangements and reduce the gap between theory and practice. However, the multiplicity of theories where cross-border governance can be placed, the lack of consensus on concepts and the multiple disciplines that can be used for studying it have increased the need of more comprehensive theoretical frameworks. From an evolutionar…

Cross-Border Integration, Cooperation and Governance
Cross-Border Governance has risen as an opportunity for rethinking integration and development at border regions. However, there is currently not consensus on what can be considered as “good” cross-border governance. From a systems approach, this paper proposes a theoretical framework by establishing a relationship among governance, integration and cooperation and propose criteria for evaluating governance models. The framework is used to analyze…

Analysis of Indian urban policies to identify their potential of achieving inclusive urban growth
India’s approach to development has always been a combination of ‘pro-poor growth’ strategies. In spite of that, majority urban population has remained deprived from basic necessity of human life. In an effort to overhaul this stagnation, the country has consciously shifted its development ideology to inclusive growth in 11th Five-Year Plan 2007. Although the plan did not define inclusive growth, but initiates a debate on the significance of incl…
